i just came home with a mantis i bought from my lfs... and i was wondering anyone would help ID it... it's pretty huge at least 9 inches... with black and white horizontal stripes along the entire head and body...the eyes seem to be spotted/ checkered... a friend who saw it in the store said it was a lyliosquillid spearer.. but i'm not sure... the raporial appendenges seem to be that of a spearer but i'm not sure... one is still regenerating.. and the other one doesn't end in a hammer nor does it end in a point... its just folded up like a praying mantis and although the tip doesn't end in a point i can see that edge of the arm is serrated... any ID help or info about this mantis would be appreciated..

does it look anything like the one pictured in the "does anyone want a 12" mantis" thread? Roy said that one was Harpiosquilla.

Re: mantis shrimp ID help

if it looks similar to the pic by racer or this pic, then it is a lysiosquillid...if you have a pic, Gonodactylus can confirm it as well.

it looks pretty darned close to that pic actually.. the coloration is the same... those colored bands...the the raporial appendages aren't quite the same and the eyes have that white speckled look that those things that those oval shaped things coming out of the head of the lysiosquillid... i can't tell the shape of the body of the one in the pic... but mine has a flatten body that gets real fat.. so it gives the the mantis a pear shape when u look from above...
i'm guess what i have is the lysiosquillid... can anyone tell me anything about it?

if youre interested i can send you the video. Its a rm. file and its only 206 k,so even on dial up connection itll be a fast download.just email me if ya want it.

The key to indentifying Lysiosquillina maculata is the white spots on the eyes. THis is one of the few lysiosqillids that has such a pattern on the eyes. As for the biology of the beast, a quick summery is:

Largerst of all stomatopods - up to 42 cm

Long-lived - probably at least 20 years

Monogamous - males do almost all the hunting

Hunting - sit and wait predator that spears mostly fish and shrimp from the burrow entrance.

Habitat - low intertidal to 20 m, sand and mud

Range - Hawaii to East Africa
