where do Mantis shrimp come from. I know they are hitchhikers on the live rock. But im wondering what sort of rock they come from eg.

yepp,
and probably still more that are undiscovered.

roys list isnt even all the species. those are just the ones that show up in the trade. there are catually literally hundreds of species of stomatopods.

and like Angel pointed out, likely others we are unaware of

what sort of glass would i need to keep one in, because my friend kept on with 6mm glass and his mantis shrimp made a crack in the glass

What species did your friend have and how big was it?

As long as you don't get a G. chiragra or a large O. scyllarus (Peacock) there shouldn't be a problem with it damaging glass. My 3" G. smithii thumps the glass on occassion... absolutely no problem.
