Mantis sound

I am undecided on the type of live rock I want to purchase for a 180 gal tank. I have a simple questions about the Mantis… how annoying is the clicking sound they give? Can you hear it many feet away? My fear is my kids rooms are around 20 feet away and the sound may keep them up if it is loud enough.

If it's a good size mantis you could definately hear the clicking noise 10-20 feet away, but I don't think it's loud or annoying enough to keep someone awake at night.

Most people also remove them before putting the rock in their tank so it's not an issue if you do that.

I can easily hear mine from 20 feet away with the television on, but again it isn't loud enough to keep me awake, and it isn't constant, some days we don't hear it at all

also a Pistol shrimp can make one heck of a POP.

I have one thats really small but you shure hear him when he's hunting :)

generally 3 in a row pause then 3 in a row == Mantis

random pops == Pistol

at least from when I had a Mantis early on and now with just the pistol.

Do Mantis make the sounds at night or day?

when they are hungry / hunting food... any time of day / night.
but you can go days and not hear any pop's.

just a matter of how easy they find food. and how hungry they get.

same goes for pistol shrimp too.
