Mantis tank?

I have a 36 gallon bow front just laying around and was thinking of turning it into a mantis tank. first off what kind of filtration should i have? how deep should the sand bed be? i dont wanna do a sump just something cheaper and easy. i dont really know much about the different kind of mantis shrimp either. i wanted something really violent or aggresive.

The topic of filtration, sandbed and other tank needs, as well as Mantis types and aggressiveness have been covered many times... searching or digging around will probably yield more and better info than I'm willing to type out while I'm brushing my teeth.

I have a 32G tall with Peacock Mantis in it. There's about a 4" sandbed in the entire thing, and he dug down to the acrylic-lined bottom inside his burrow. For filtration, I have about 60lbs of LR in there, and I use a Bakpak 2r for filtration/media/skimming.

On the way I have a 3G pico in which I'll have a juvenile Viridis in for some time.

Do lots of research on lighting, burrows, sandbeds, food, molting and over-all mantis care before you commit to anything. I researched for almost an entire year and let my tank cycle for a ridiculous amount of time while I figured out exactly how to care best for my new buddy.

I had to save a mantis from a friend temporarily because he hastily setup a tank without researching much. I nearly kept the little dude, but the guy showed he was able to learn from his mistake after nearly killing the mantis.

Take your time. Your Mantis will thank you and will be more active and comfortable in a better environment -- I know it sure has paid off for me.

yea ive been reading about them the last couple of weeks but the names really get me confused. i was thinking peacock but didnt know if it could be in a glass tank and almost everyone has one of those.

Peacocks are pretty much infamous for being ABLE to break glass. If they're not antagonized, they won't. The best thing you can do is line the bottom of your glass tank with acrylic (will have to be a custom cut with that bow-front) and you should be okay.

And yeah, everyone has a Peacock, they're beautiful, and active, and have great personalities. But like us, every one of them is different. Even mine appears to have mood swings and is different from day to day. Sometimes he'll be feeling rambunctious and play with the sticks that feed him the krill, or he'll box my Stealth Heater... and sometimes he just grabs the krill and goes back down to his burrow -- not to be seen again until the next day.

If you take the necessary precautions, you shouldn't have to worry about a Peacock breaking the glass.
