Mantis Trap

After putting up with a 2" mantis for 3 months and watching 4 cucumbers and 80% of my turbo snail population disappear, I decided he must go. Built a trap identified on Tampa Bay Saltwater site and nailed him in less that an hour.

Would you be interested in shipping it to someone who's been trying for months to aquire one?

Like, ME!

I was surprised that I caught him so quickly and was not prepared. I Tried unsuccessfully to save him overnight but he did not make it.
I've seen evidence of another possiblity in the tank and if I get him I will let you know. There is an aquarium store here and they may be able to get one ready for shipment.

I looked on the TBS site and couldn't find anything about a Mantis trap, I have been in the same situation as you . The mantis in my tank has killed all my other shrimps (aside from the cleaners) + all my smaller fish.

I have even ripped the whole tank apart and scoured every piece of live rock to find his lair ( 150 lbs of it too) . I still have not caught it .. but boy when I do nothing on this earth will stop me from destroying it.

Could you post a url of when the item about the trap is please.

Thanks Newker.

Hi Newker,
It should be pictured here:

If this does not get you there, look on their homepage under the last link called "Do It Yourself."
It's a water bottle cut at the base of the top, inverted and glued with silicon rubber. Best to tab the silicon around the inside of the base (which allows the air bubbles to escape when you sink it to the bottom), fit the inverted top into it, and let it sit overnight to dry. I put a small piece of frozen shrimp in it, tied a string around the neck to retrieve it and placed in near the last sighting of the monster. Caught him very quickly.

I can't find the trap on TBS either but it is very simple. Get an Empty water bottle or 20ounce soda bottle. Cut the top off about 1/3 of the way down. Turn the top upside down and place in the bottle. Might try super glueing it to get it to stay. Put wome shrimp in the bottom and place in the tank and wait

Mantis Trap/Monster Crab Trap

Mantis Trap/Monster Crab Trap

Just nailed the monster crab that was trying to get my last brittle star. Used the same trap that caught the Mantis. Needed to move quickly as the first time he went into the trap he was able to move back out very fast. Tied a string to the top of the trap and after he went in, yanked him out of the tank. Noticed that all of the remaining hermits, turbos and even the fish were smiling. Would not be surprised if there was a party scheduled now that "Ting Dong the Witch is dead.."
