Our presenter at the March meeting is Dr. Tzadik from the USF Fish Ecology Laboratory! He'll be presenting about Goliath grouper! Guest speakers volunteer their time to present at club meetings - so do come and show your support!

The Atlantic Goliath Grouper, Epinephelus itajara, is critically endangered throughout its range. However, the population in southern Florida has begun to show signs of recovery. In his presentation Dr. Tzadik will share historical trends that led to the decline of Goliath Groupers, the present status of the population, and the ongoing research being done in the state of Florida and internationally. As future management strategies develop, what innovative approaches will we need to assess the population of Goliath Groupers?

the Atlantic goliath? Is that different from the one all over around here that is massively out of control in terms of population size?

Yeah, if there's structure, you'll find a Jewfish. And the first time you dive with them you realize how big they can get. I had what I estimate to be a 300 pounder come from behind me while stringing a fish on a spearfishing dive. Surprised me for a second. He parked about 10 feet away from me under a ledge and just starred at me. I moved on.

Not my video, but this was out here in the Gulf... I say their numbers are doing just fine. Probably time for the FFWC to start issuing tags.

And on the other coast. :) They're a bunch of thugs I tell you!!!

IT's kind of like how, on the texas side, ARS are overrunning the reefs due to excess management in their favor - two week rec season at best but the commercial guys get their haul...

nah that's the same report gulf-wide....ARS EVERYWHERE, can't get through the swarms of them to get to the reef below per a bunch of guys I've heard.....yet NOAA seems to think there's a shortage (so the commercial guys can get more of 'em?)

Oh man. I have not laughed this hard in a while. That second video was funny as hell. That guys should have been wearing a brown dive suit. Thank you for sharing.

Diving on the Spiegel Grove wreck off of Largo, I got near an overhang that this massive Goliath was hanging under. Apparently it did not like how close I got and started growling, I felt my chest reverberating. He won :D
