Im behind half a credit to graduate so Im taking marine biology online and i have to type a letter to a local government official on the Importance of a healthy coastline. I understand the basic reasons why have a healthy coast is important but I dont think I could write an "A" paper on it. If someone could explain or post a link to a good website, it would be greatly appreciated. Also what "official" should i write to?

Thanks in advance
Andrew

I suggest picking a specific topic that relates back to having healthy coastlines (keeping boat traffic speed down to avoid prop scarring in seagrass beds, keeping nutrient input and runoff pollution low to keep estuary systems healthy, keeping fishery catches in a proper balance to ensure a healthy system, etc) and write the paper on that topic, to the government official.

For some ideas on how to format something like this you might take a look at the 'get involved' or 'action centers' at places like worldwildlife.org and oceana.org, just to name two. Choose any official who you think could have an impact on the topic.. like our FL representatives and senators to Congress, or even state reps or the governor.

That's my suggestion at least. Narrow your topic, research why its important to healthy coastlines and what the main conservation problem is in that topic currently, and suggest ways the official could help us support a solution.

IE: Sea turtle deaths in oceans due to marine debris is pretty common, especially becuase they'll eat plastic bags and popped balloons that look like jellyfish (a favorite food) in the water. Here on the Space Coast we have some great sea turtle nesting grounds, and turtles depend on the sites. However.. very close to some of this important nesting habitat, we have lots of people releasing plenty of debris every week in the form of balloons to celebrate the departures of cruise ships at Port Canaveral. They're released, ascend to a high altitudes, pop and come back down to earth. Sure, not all of them come right back to the lagoon and space coast beaches, but plenty do. You could just go after marine debris as a slightly larger topic.

Obviously there's two sides to this situation.. there always is when we talk about conservation hurdles, and I dont want to incite a riot here on the forum! :) Its just a suggestion for a local topic that would be easy to write about.

I hope that helps!

Thanks a lot Sarah, I was having a mental block and couldn't find anything better to say than "uhhhhh.....pollution is bad, clean water good"......lol

you have definetly helped me to overcome my "brain fart" as my grandpa would say

Thanks again

If you don't mind me asking. Where are you taking the class online ?
My wife and I were both talking about taking a class like that.

All great suggestions above. You could also add in the new no motor zones on Mosquito Lagoon where boats cannot use internal combustion engines in order to save the grass beds that are so important to fish. Another thought would be phosphate runoff in the Tampa area and the apparent tie-in to Red Tide in the Gulf.

Another good online school is columbia southern university. Since it is a full online, regional accredidation does not apply to them. They do have national and the DTEC which has been known to have higher requirements. It does require alot of essay papers though. PM me if you have any questions. There is a few at my work that are going through this program and a couple others going for their masters.

Or, since you are in reef caretaking, talk about how the pollution of our coastline and its effects on the reefs. Maybe even go so far as the increase in fertilizer(PO4 and NO4 rich substances) effects the algal growth on our coasts, spiking algae blooms and essentially turning the oceans back into biological soup of the primitive earth. Because of our overfishing, this algae will essentially create red tides killing anything in their way. Maybe this is a little off the coastline and off-topic, but if you could use this it may at least be of interest to you.

You can also mention good news of things that actually work...with excellent measurable results of reduced run-off due to retention/detention stormwater ponds, tertiary treatment of sewage, recycling reclaimed water vs. dumping it in the Bay and over-algae-fying the estuaries.

I have seen HUGE improvements in the Bay since the late 60's early 70's when it was almost a dead water body due to pollution and red tides ( I always suspected due to excessive runoff and fertilizer nutrients).

Also something that heleped a great deal, but rarely mentioned: a commercial shrimping ban in Tampa Bay in the mid 80s helped enormously by eliminating the wastefull slaughter of small fry and estuary animals (by-catch, as they call it). Now Tampa Bay actually has clear water again in the winter time, something I haven't seen since the mid 60's when I was a kid.

Unfortuneatly, we cant go back and remove all the finger islands that were dredged and filled where there used to be mangrove habitats, and we can't removed the ten thousand, non-resident owned condos at the beach, but maybe one summer, a hurricane likely take care of that. <yikes>

Of course money always is the only thing that matters to most government people, so adding up all of the above, you can mention its a better place for tourism, and that means big bucks.

Thanks a lot everybody this is going to help me a lot, I'm definetly going to get an "A" on this one now, Sailor_jon I will probaly talk about the tourism aspect of it because that is what politicians care about anyway, but I will also talk about the reefs like cschweitzer said, and try to incorporate as much info as I can, hopefully I will confuse him into agreeing with me :)

Thanks again
Andrew

I would just like to thank everyone for there help I got a 100% on my paper and its thanks to all of you.

Thanks again
Andrew

Woot congrats on your paper thats great news!!! I think I'd like to get some kind of paper that says I learned about marine bio but i have to finish this one that will say computer engineering first ><

well the thing is Im not going to actually get a paper that says I learned about marine bio because its for high school, I really just did it to learn some more and because it interests me.

Right. i realized only now that those two should be on different lines. MY attention span is about that of a fly, sorry ;p
