marine velvet

Is there any medication that I could use while the fish is in the dt.I have a flame angel with velvet, and any time I approach the tank it hides in the rocks. If not I will have to remove the live rock. Thanks David

The recommended treatment for velvet is copper which is not something your suppose to use in your display tank.

Unfortunately there are few SW diseases which can be successfully treated in in the DT ... just another reason why QT prior to putting a fish in the DT is almost mandatory.

make sure that if you are using copper for your treatment, then remove all tangs if you have any as it would surely damage their digestive systems and their appetite will be loss and slowly lead to their death.
Good luck

I disagree...Cupramine has been used to treat tangs successfully many times and although i have heard people say this statement before i have yet to see someone give any proof other then they were told this bye someone else in the hobby.

I still can't catch the angel, the fins are starting to look white and tearing apart. It may be fin rot.I have put new water in the qt with formlin ready for him.

agreed^ im not sure who came up with this whole tangs and angel are sensitive to copper meds.....but till this day i have never had a problem using copper on any and all fish best way to ensure an out break in MO

As previously stated .. velvet is a difficult disease to diagnose. It tends to be a quick killer so if your fish has had this illness for a weeks its unlikely its velvet. A picture would help.

Discolored fins with tearing is often a bacterial problem - sometimes it will go away on its own with some help with good food and excellent water conditions (fish's own immune system may help cure itself) - if good food/water doesn't resolve then QTing combined with an antibiotic may be in order.

Hope this helps.

Formalin would be ineffective against marine velvet - would help if the fish has brooklynella (aka clownfish disease) - formalin would also be ineffective against a bacterial issue.

Brook like velvet is a fast killer and if you have had this problem for a while it falls lower on the probable disease list.

This is the best shot I can get.Notice the fins and eye.

That would appear to be a bacterial problem. Amylo (aka velvet) gets looks like a very fine powder/sheen on the fish - often accompanied by the fish hanging out at the top of the tank because of breathing difficulties.

Thanks Kevin, He hasn't been at the top of the tank,It is still eating good.I have him back in qt.All other fish look good no signs of the bacteria.
