Maroon clowns

A twenty gallon will be too small in a year and way too small in 5 years. Clowns can live for decades, an adult can reach 6 inches. If Maroons were not so brutally aggressive they would be my favorite clown. The smaller the tank the smaller the territories the fewer areas for those fish on the receiving end of the aggression to escape to.

I had a maroon clown for about 2 years in a 55 gallon, he was a great fish when he was little, after a year or so he started to dominate the left side of the tank and you could tell he was the boss of the tank. Had to end up getting rid of him due to the little **** would move corals on his end of the tank and he would push over rock work in my tank, little guy had some puhing power.Very nice looking fish but very hard to keep in a small tank

Regarding aggression, it all depends upon the specimen. Before upgrading, I kept a mating pair of maroons (female was quite large) in a 34 gallon.

I have a pair of maroons in my 30g. They do not show any aggression to other fishes at all. I have 2 damsels and a sixline as well. I will be moving them to a larger system as they get larger.

Give it time. They are the most aggressive of all clown species. There have been stories the a fully grown female killing their mates. Not a pretty picture.

Not sure why there is two threads of this,

But a single maroon will turn into a big big female in time. Maroon females are usually the aggressors.

My 20 YO female is extremely territorial but not a bully - I've had her so long I feel like she is one of my children. her constant stirring of my sand bed drives me absolutely insane.

Patsfan hit the nail on the head. Territorial, but does not terrorize the tank. My 3 year old maroon loves her corner and loves to stir up the sand until there is no sand left. Once a week i move all the sand back into the corner and you can see the hatred in her face when I do that lol. I have her in a 46 gallon bowfront and she gets along with all the other scrappy fish I have. She is with 4 damsels (different variety), a firefish, flame angel (boss of the tank), starry blenny, and a parasite cleaner fish (name slips me).
