Maroon Clowns

oh. I forgot my point.. my female wasent a 'large female' she was a tiny bit smaller than 2 inches (not counting tail fin)

In my limited experience my my gsm (formerly gsm's :( ) the pairing problem is over rated. I had a "female" over 3.5" and a juvi about .75" put it in a critter keeper for three hours before releasing him she tore up his fins but accepted him soon after.

Hey, can you guess at what size a Maroon Clown has changed into a female by, or at what size it is probably still a male?

HRDNEGLCRY... as far as i know... no. but im still learning a great deal.
from what i understand...
if theres a male and a female present, all juvis will stay non sexed.
if the male dies, the biggest healthiest, most dominate juvi will become male.
if the female dies.. the male will turn female and a juvi will become male

in a fish store/reef tank... i cant say. theres a time frame for sure.
If you buy a single clown and leave it in your reef by itself, it will turn female.. but im pretty sure it takes at least a couple months.

I know you can qt a juvi/or male for 4-6 weeks with no issues of it becomeing female by accident... but that depends if the lfs kept it by itself before that too... and where it came from and how old it is etcetc lol

Confooseld: I was very scared and freaked out about trying to add a juvi. I agree that it is made into a much bigger deal than it actually was. I was waiting for blood and anarchy. I got a little chaseing.. thats about it lol of course, im totally happy about that.. but the clownfish book and the faq's above scared the heck out of me. I actually regretted getting a maroon. Im so happy with my lil couple :)

semi... i dont have any other fish yet :D

its only 45 gallons so i really only have room for 1 more...
either going to be a flamehawk fish, a manderin (i need to wait another yr for that) or somesort of dotty back maybe

I dont think it will be a problem though. it'll have to learn to stay away from the nem... but i dont see feebee (the female) leaving her anemone for anyone. lol

I have heard that if you get a fish with the same body shape as a clown there might be an issue, but i donno.

my next fish has to be a swimmer. anytime anyone sees my tank the first to things they say are

'are those fish ok?' 'dont they do anything besides wiggle in that thing?' 'you need some swimmers' lol
I dont care what people say, i think a clown with a nem is a beautiful thing, but id like to see a little movment. I get so excited when my clowns swim in a powerhead stream, its the only movment i get!

danzels? are u crazy? just kidding... angels get to big for my tank... Im going slow, no rush. when i the right fish.. Ill be running home to set up the qt im sure. I walked into my lfs and saw a whole family of maroons one day.. 12-15 juvis a huge ma and pa... I had my juvi on hold about 4 hours while i rushed around getting ready for him. wasent planning on getting a juvi at all at that point

That's not the way it works in the wild there aren't any Maroon "families". It's one pair per anemone and no juvi's they aren't like other clowns.

Who is saying that is the way it works opposite of what you said?

Hate to hijack but if you REALLY want a mandarin check out these arcti-pods. They've been getting rave reviews by the local reefers and mandarins supposedly accept them quite readily. Might also be a good way to wean them onto frozen food....

i looked at that yesterday. really... I sure like the tye/dye skin they have :D
want one pretty bad. so whats your opinion on quarentineing them?

so your saying maroons have babies and throw them out? where did you see this info that the juvis cant hang out in the same nem? I have no way to disprove this, but I dont buy it. want to see for myself :) do u have an article?

My understanding is that all clownfish babies are planktonic for a number of days and then after metamorphosis they will host to an anemone which means they do not host their parents' anmeone but end up joining a non-related group as juvies. I don't know anything about how premnas differ.

BTW: no (successful) experience with mandarins so I don't know what to suggest wrt. quarantine.

To start out there isn't anything like Maroons throwing their babies out they just never take care of their offspring past the egg to begin with. I don't have an article about the subject but I do have a book. (Wilkerson's)

I would be happy with two adult Maroon Clownfish able to stay in the same tank together. I have two that will possibly pair. The problem is that the big one is in my 33 Ricordea tank. If I remove him then The Ricordea is alone, and I might lose interest in the entire tank. I would move him to the 120 which I think will offer the best chance of them living together. Breeding (harvesting broods) might be hard since other fish are in the tank too. I would love to see my biggest one become a grown female. Can anybody tell me how fast Maroon Clowns grow? My Triggers are growing fast enough that I can tell that they have grown. That is fast enough for me. I like to feed my fish a lot on some days, but not every day. I keep Hermits in all of my tanks (except my ricordea tank) as clean up crews

why don't you put the smaller one in with the larger in the 33. A 33 gal tank with just ric. and 2 maroons would be great. As for breeding, you should have no trouble collecting the fry. I wouldn't put a clownfish in your aggressive tank, they will eventually become food.

my not just put the smaller one in the recordia tank with the big one? isent the only problem that u want the maroons in the trigger tank?

maroons grow noticably fast for sure. I can def. tell a difference since i got them...
I feed twice a day..
