maroon vs yellow tang

:mad2: I'm not sure what's happening, but I think my YT is harassing my maroons. I would think the female could kick his butt, but maybe he's being really persistent and getting in a few of his own jabs. The clowns are getting pretty territorial (well, SHE is) so I suspect they've resumed spawning. It's not been a problem before, but the YT is a somewhat recent addition. He was added after a tank-makeover and that makeover had caused the maroons to stop spawning.

First, I saw a scrape on her side last week. It healed overnight. Then I noticed this weekend that the female maroon's tail was torn in a couple of spots. I kept an eye on it and it has already healed. Now today, her dorsal fin is beat up! I could see if it was the male getting injured, she's fairly rough with him sometimes. I can't think of any other fish in the tank besides the YT who could take her on!

What do you think? Keep the tang and see if they can work it out or is it just going to get worse? The YT does hang out in the clowns' territory but it hasn't raised issues until now. I'm keeping a close eye on things to see if it really is the YT.

Sounds like your YT does not like maroonies Some YTs have really nasty personalities.

If you want to have a spawning pair of clowns, remove the tang.

If you like the looks of the tang, remove the clowns.

Continious stress will bring on ich or worse.

I think it's actually that the YT can fight back when the maroon tries to run him out of her turf. The other fish know to turn tail and hide from her, he just lashes with his tang. She's getting REALLY territorial these days. She's biting me harder than usual at feeding time and charging at the glass if I'm fish-watching. You all know how maroons are, she's just a tough girl with a boyfriend to protect! I really think the tang is the attackee, the maroon is probably the attacker.

At the same time, I really can't tolerate a fish that injures my favorite fish so he's going to have to be relocated. I'm trying to net him, but it may take a bit. All of my fish will hand-feed so now I just need to acclimate him to being hand-fed while I'm holding a net in the other hand.

Maybe get one of those clear acrylic fish traps. I had a lot better luck enticing fish into that and then slamming the door than trying to chase them around with a net.
