Mars Bod?

Valid and good points Fred.Either a sticky of notice or a sticky thread just for FS/WTB/WTT threads. The way it sounds anything would be welcome.

And thanks for asking, the 30 is doing great. It had a couple days downtime because the lightbulb burned out a couple weeks back but for the same price I got another one shipped and everything is looking fabulous again :)

Dont get me wrong guys, I would love to get rid of some of this clutter on my sandbed, I got even more since the last time I sold a few things. But Ive been trying to hold back due to all the sale signs lately and didnt want to keep burning people out. Even more of a reason to have a sticky thread for this, so we can all dump, buy, sell, trade on one thread and clutter the hell out of that instead of our board. Then everyones happy?Just a thought. Keep em coming if you got em.

I appreciate all those who've responded so far.

All these FS threads from people we as a club have never known, met, or heard of ultimately takes away from the comradery of the club, ultimately not making it a club forum anymore.

And for those thinking this is the "sacramento hangout" read the top of the board! If you go to the sellers forum, you'll see it's designed to reach your particular locality anyway. Hence the reason they make you post your location in the title of your thread.

The reason for this thread is the club mostly. I have seen alot of sideline sarcasm, hints and insinuations but no one will come right out and say it!Nor will many address it openly in a thread soley designed to do so.

So let me be your confrontaionalist! If there needs to be a bad guy, let it be me then! But WE ALL need to talk about this, and maybe only IMO, but I think a proactive stance is warrented, rather than merely making fun of it and forget about it, or get your jabs in and leave. For alot of you brand new people, your completely oblivious to this, but this place has become a ghost town. And it sux! I considered myself having lots of friends in this club, and rightly so. Theres alot of cool people to meet, shoot the breeze, talk shop, whatever. Those people dont come around much anymore,if at all. And you know who you are, and yes I notice. And Im also sure others do as well.

Im, gonna pause for a bit out of frustration, not with anyone in particular but with this whole ordeal. Hopefully more MEMBERS/BOD will speak up as well.

IMO...I don't see nothing wrong with people posting stuff thay have to sell with could lead to helping another reefer out locally rather then them just leaving it in the garage when it could go to good use to someone who maybe looking for such items at a cheaper cost.. I mean if it really bothers you why open the thread? Maybe because your hoping there will be something your interested in? I don't know...

As far as this being a "sacramento hangout" im sure people like to meet others in their neighborhoods that might be interested in the same hobby as them. This is a great place to do so. Yeah not all are members of the club but maybe one day they will be. I know im not but im planning out just trying to find the time. Just cause im not a member yet dosent stop me from viewing this forum looking to help others out and get some help if need be.

As i can tell this forum has been very quiet past few months and really all we got going is the FS threads...I mean its not like its placing other threads off the front page, cause really there is not that much threads getting high traffic...

Just my view on things....

I definetly agree with you

Not only do I agree, but Ive said that exact same thing to the president a couple months ago when a few of us were talking about it.

But in reality, any thing good or worthy of discussion is just gonna get washed down through the pages if we dont manage these FS threads and the recent but consistant slurry of them. At first like you,it didnt bother me, because I like to window shop by nature. But when alot of the more experienced people are getting sick of it and the behaviour and dont come around anymore because of it,we all lose out and were left here looking at FOR SALE signs :/ Know whatta mean Vern?

I vote sticky, one organized place for FS/FT, however could get messy and confusing if PM's are not used exclusivly in response to them and let the originator update that particular thread only.
Could end peanut gallery comment like "whoa thats way too much for that" or simmilar comments that are unproductive.

how many new people go out and buy tanks and all the other good stuff and then have their tanks crash and die. They usually give up and sell their equipment. If there was a thread off of MARS site for selling and trading in sacramento area, I think it is a win win for everybody. Heck, I've got 3 tanks running and 3 empty tanks in the garage; i'm always looking to pick up another tank if the price is right.

My 2 cents:

The bulletin board is what the members make of it. I think time/resources of the MARS BOD can be better spent proactively creating a valuable learning environment here (and elsewhere...), rather than reacting to a few undesirable threads. Let's all start a thread about stuff that interests us, or stuff that we might want more info about. Examples: Cyanide. Cool fish. The industry behind this hobby. Captive bred livestock. Fragging techniques. Et cetera et cetera et cetera....

Exactly. Right now, reefkeeping is in a doldrum. There aren't many new innovations to be discussing and a lot of people have the summer off.

I think it's a bit harsh to be complaining about a bunch of "for sale" threads. We have unprecedent fuel and energy costs. We have been having massive blackouts. People don't have the disposable income they used to, and there have been many tank disasters as of late. RC recently instated a minimum 50 post rule to the Selling forum.

Take a look around. Do you think for sale threads are unique to MARS? CVR, BAR, So-Cal have all been massive boneyards. why not turn a "for sale" thread into a fun discussion?

http://www.reefcentral.com/forums/showthread.php?s=&threadid=903451

Why alienate people and make them feel bad for selling some stuff during economically hard times? There is enough hate in reefkeeping to go around. No need to breed more.

I think the RC forums (of which the MARS forum is a small portion) are NOT strictly for worthwhile discussion of reef related topics. I've been readin along with the MARS and BAR forums for maybe 4 years now, and I'm not really offended by FS posts. Nor am I offended by the plethora of Off Topic threads... I don't partake in any of the OT discussions, but you guys can talk about whatever you want.

I agree with Tacocat. Perhaps a little empathy is in order for those of us who don't have anything we need to sell. If you want to exclude people who are not local, you cannot do that here on the RC forum. I think if you make a private forum on the MARS website, you will find it to be a bit unpopular.

Anyhow... I've got some stuff for sale PM if interested ;)

Whats wrong with a Members only forum on the Mars website as part of the membership you get access to that forum?

While we still have the RC public forum up for other topixs and such.

nothing's wrong with that.. except that I don't think everyone's going to hop on board. I think the good thing about RC is that EVERYONE is on it, not just MARS. When you bring as many people as there are on RC together, that's where new ideas and detailed discussions come from. Is the MARS RC forum that bad that you want a private one?

I guess I shouldn't post here any more  ...

Seems like this thread has kind of gone where it wasn't intended to go. While the MARS forum is primarily a place where MARS members can touch bases/discuss things, I would hate to see it become exclusionary, particularly to locals who just don't happen to be MARS members. Responses like Elite's concern me -- people should not be averse to posting in the club forum. It IS a public RC forum, after all. We lose the value of an online community if we begin limiting who can post.

I don't really think most people have a problem with the FS threads, either. The concern is that the discussion threads will get pushed down off the first page and lost behind all of the selling. IMHO the suggestion for a FS sticky is possibly a good start. It's not a headache for the administrators and you just have to subscribe to be made aware of new items for sale. Negotiations should be handled via PMs to keep the thread from growing unnecessarily. For the administrators, is there a way to easily cull or expire old posts so that it doesn't grow/split uncontrollably?

My thoughts exactly.

As mentioned...RC is a public forum, which means that the public are allowed access to its contents - thats the whole purpose....to make it available to all interested. If you want to restrict certain types of posts or make access only available to paying members, I think it needs to be done on the forum specifically for members (ie. a private site such as the MARS website.)

I kind of feel the same as Elite....constant complaining about not being able to say this or that makes me not want to post on here any more, but then I think to myself that I have every right to be here....just like the members. Sure members pay dues.....so give them their own private place...somewhere other than a public forum.

On the note of FS threads and stickys.....if there is so much FS posting, surely a sticky isn't needed as each post would bump it up...?!

Since we have a hard time keeping the MARS content current as it is, I doubt we have the time or resources to host a discussion forum. Things have been slow and it seems all that has been on the board is FS thread but as Matt said, we need to take on some interesting topics ourselves.
If you PM when interested and don't post if not, they will drop down the list of posts as we post new topics.

Please dont take things to the extereme, that is not at all what I ment. Everyone is welcome.

I was simply stating that As part of membership we have a private forum for the club on our website. While we still have this wonderful forum here and open to any and everyone.

I also, like the sticky idea, where all FS threads are concentrated in one topic that will always be at the top.

I am part of some Online Gaming groups and with membership there is a private forum, along with the public forums. Thats where I got the Idea.

Just an idea, But as shiela says, they are very swampped with things. SOoooo it sint likely it would even be done.

PS And Yes this is open to ANYONE and Everyone, I have said that in the past to other people that were from other parts of the country and world.

These Are just Ideas and thoughts, some are liked and others are bombed.
