Mask questions

I'm not scuba certified (yet), but I do have a few questions about masks and stuff. I'm going snorkeling in Florida in a few days, and in a month, I'll be at Big Island, Hawai'i. The mask that I have is a black Deep See Omni Mask.

Can I replace the lens of my mask? It currently has prescription lenses, but if I decide to wear contacts on the days I go snorkeling, is there a way for me to take the lenses out and replace them with the non-prescription lenses?

How do I defog these things? I'm not sure if there is a silicon layer on the glass or not. I tried using saliva, which works on my swimming goggles, but when I breathed on the mask, it fogged up just as well....

Defogging is achieved by using dishwashing detergent. In the past potatoes fluid or tooth paste to make easier to defog and if you are lucky your own spit will do it.
With modern masks i carry a small bottle of detergent and put some in the mask, add a drip or two of the ocean to the mask as well and move it all around with your fingers, flush out with only a little ocean water to not get rid of all the water with detergent in it and there you go, cheap defog!

~you have to prep the mask the first time you use it. toothpaste is used often, which is mildly abrasive and should take off oils etc used in the assembly process. if you don't prep it, you'll fog constantly.

Ok...going to Hawai'i tomorrow, and still have no idea how to prep my mask. Is there a YouTube video to show me how to prep the mask initially, and before dives?

First you need to put toothpaste and a little water on the inside of the lens. And scrub really good and hard with your fingers. Rinse and repeat a few times. That will get rid of the protective coating on the inside.

When you get on the boat or the beach or whatever spit on the inside of the lens and rub with finger. Let it dry and then rinse out with seawater. You should be good to go. Repeat between dives.

I find I need to clean my mask very often with toothpaste, I'm not sure why but I get lots of problems with fogging up and having to constantly let water in to sort it. Regular toothpaste helps a lot.
It's an atomic frameless so not cheap rubbish.

last snorkel trip i went on i asked what they were using...lemon joy dish detergent...worked better then any commercial anti fog i've ever bought...and my mask is prescription too

tooth paste to clean a new mask, or a dirty mask... but I use sea gold anti fog and rarely have issues in hundreds of dives

You can prep a new mask by burning the lens with a lighter, easy way to get rid of the film left on the inside of the lens from the manufacturing process. No need to scrub with toothpaste....youtube it.

I would recommend against using dish detergent as a defogger. If you have an irregular shaped or bigger face you will have some water seepage. Plus when you do your open water check out dives you must take your mask off, put it back on and clear it. If you use dish detergent, that is going to sting your eyes.

Just be sure and rinse it out before you put it on....works good

Johnson and Johnson baby shampoo.....my wife and I always have a travel size bottle in our snorkel gear bags and no stinging eyes. A drop in each lense...smear it around and rinse. Usually lasts for an hour or so unless there is a big temperature difference between air and water

I always used spit to defog. No issues ever.
