Massive Polyp Extension

I've had this frag for a couple weeks now and it's polyp extension is freakish.

I've moved it from high flow/low flow areas with no change. I've moved it from low light to high light with no change.

Now this may just be a characteristic of the monti itself but I've never seen anything like it.

Any ideas or suggestions?

It's a macro shot - the proximity is throwing it off and making it look like a flowerpot. In reality it's a pretty small frag.

It was sold to me as a sunset monti. The polyps reach full extension when all lights are on. Once it goes to actinics the polyps shrink down a bit.

I think people are usure as to whether it's a species of montipora or porites. If you were to see it in person it is definitely montipora-like. I guess when it is magnified it could be mistaken for a goniopora but it is definitely not. I was fortunate enough to have just gotten a piece of it myself.

I can definitely see where it could cause some confusion with the polyps being that huge. Without anything in the shot to give some sense of scale it really does look like a larger polyped species.

It might be good for me to take a couple of shots further back to get a sense of scale.

I was going by the 12 tipped polyps and by how thick the skeletal structure is. I did not think that SPS had12 tip polyps. It is cool looking.

It's definitely nothing like I've seen before for sure.

FYI, the polyps in my staghorn have 12 tips.

The more I look into it the more it looks like this is just a characteristic of sunset monti. What do you guys think?

looks like one of the wild monti's that have been coming in the last couple of months, I think they are M. nodosa's, some have freakish PE, and some have greenish polyps. looks like you got a combo of both, nice frag.
