Massive Polyp Extension

Rollin,
I certainly think it is a sunset coral. Id say to use the word "monti" in a fairly loose sense with this guy. It may very well be a monti, but I dont think anyone is quite clear on that. It is definitely not a goniopora, or an Alveopora. (See Veron's Corals of Aust. and the Indopacific pp. 236-65 for a look at the polyp and corralite structure) Either way it is a great looking piece. If you are unsure try and compare for yourself with some pictures of identified species. My opinion is that if it was sold to you by a reputable person as a sunset, and exhibits the characteristics of a sunset, then you have a definitive answer.

Any chance it's in the same class as this, but with long polyps?

Rollin: who did you get your frag from?

I've got a large colony of this exact coral and have distributed a few frags of it, one to acro-ed, a piece to Riptidesreef.com and one to Dav.
I believe it to be the same coral that reeffarmers.com describes as their "sunset monti" or "green polyp sunset coral"

In some cases i have seen it throw out polyps that are 1/4"-1/2inch long! and it grows like a weed.
Here's a picture of my colony

I've read several articles on this coral and one characteristic is that it has "uncommonly long polyp extension". Steve Tyree remarked on the abnormally long polyps. Like one person said before, it is difficult to tell the true size of the coral from the photo and the macro shot does make it look like a flowerpot or another LPS. I can promise you that this is definately an SPS. I have more photos of the parent colony.

I'm glad you like it Chris. I hope you know me well enough by now to know that I would not take advantage. If I thought for a second that this was somehow misrepresented, I would be the first to give you money back.

I've heard a couple of different people say..."nice piece". I know I like it.

Most definitely a nice piece. The pic UFreefer put up doesnt even do his colony justice, it is a truly remarkable coral. This species is one that everyone has to see to believe.

Not at all Billy - I take your word for it and I've loved everything I've gotten from you!

I was a bit concerned with the polyp extension at first but now that it's been a while and I see that they extend like that no matter what I do and it's definitely a conversation piece. I can't wait for it to grow out a bit and see what this thing will look like once it gets some maturity on it.

As always I'll be back for more from you :)

Thanks Chris. Like I said before....integrity is the most important part of business for me. I really appreciate when customers become friends. I am always on the lookout for rare pieces and I have a possibility coming soon. A reliable source tells me he has a new species of xenia that Eric Borneman says he has never seen before. It encrusts like star polyps but the hands still pulse and its yellow'ish. My friend has nicknamed the piece "YEX" for yellow pulsing xenia. I should have 1 or 2 frags within a week. Pester me to death to show it to you otherwise I will forget. People like you deserve first dibs. Youve been nothing less than awesome.

Take care brother!

Be careful what you wish for or you'll get 25 emails a day from me. :) I'd definitely like to see it when you get it. I'm always wanting interesting items since you see alot of the same things with the reefers in this area.

Anytime you need a gadfly to sing your praises I'll be there ;)

my yellow/green Montipora altasepta looks the same way. I have a green sunset coral and it looks entirely different.
