Oh, I use it as a backup. It's noisier than the RD so I don't use it regularly. It does however push harder than an RD12. I guess it's a tradeoff. I use it when I take an RD offline for service.

I'm seriously looking at their smallest one but I'm not sure I like that stutter step it can take on startup. Moving up to the next model does away with that but gives me like double the flow I need.

Yes, if I understand correctly, no control to make sure it spins in the correct direction upon startup. So it turns itself on and off several times until it turns the right way. I guess it could be as few as just once if it got it right the first time, or as many as.....
