What master water test kit is recommended? i need to purchase one ASAP, i was going to purchase an API master kit, but i heard it was crap...?

It's not really crap it's just kind of at the bottom of the pick list. The results API kit's provide can be hard to determine at times making it tough to get a good read on a particular parameter but i believe API is one of the cheaper ones. From there it's Red Sea or Salifert (spelling may be wrong on that one). I'm sure there's more but those are the two that come to mind and I'm not sure if they are available in a master test kit.

I would agree with API being an "economy" test kit I would get a Hanna checker for certain tests

The API master test kit is fine IMHO for a fish only system, but if you plan on keeping corals, particularly stoney corals I would spend the extra money for Salifert or Red Sea.

i looked at the red sea, but they only sell kits for calcium Alk. I'm not sure if they have a kit where i am allowed to measure everything. i also can't seem to find a kit to test for nitrate/nitrite/amonia (looking on amazon)

Check a marine site like Bulk Reef Supply, Drs Foster & Smith or Marine Depot. Red Sea sells a foundation kit which is Mg, Ca & KH. They also have an algae kit, NO3 & PO4. The others can be purchased separately, All the Siefert tests are sold as singles.

API has worked fine for me...It's not as precise as some, but getting into the hobby is expensive enough as it is, spending $100+ on a testing kit sucks. Go API and upgrade when you can.
