Maui snorkle pics

Great pictures! They take me back to my honeymoon in Kauai about six months ago... it sure is nice over there.

Your pictures turned out really nice-- what kind of camera did you use?

I borrowed a buddies canon powershot S500 with canon underwater housing. Point and click. Not the easiest to change settings on the fly, and I'm no photographer. Wish I could have captured things clearer, and MANY opportunities were missed.

Capt_Cully - I just came back from a 12 day cruise around the Hawaiian islands this past Saturday. I snorkelled in Maui last week also. I hit Makena beach and Olawalu. I could swear your shots were taken at Makena, or at least somewhere nearby. They look exactly like mine. All the same fish and corals. I love those red urchins. I was using an Olympus SW790. It is only rated to a depth of 10 feet so good only for snorkelling. You talk about your inexperience with the camera underwater, I know what you mean. I found my videos looked like they were shot at high speed. It is a combination of swimming, fighting the currrent and moving the camera around to quickly get shots before they get out of range. If I could do it all over again I might get better videos. I guess i will have to watch them in slow-motion. I shot more video than stills because I wanted to remember how it felt to actually be there, plus I love the sound of my own breathing underwater. :)

Sucks to be back from there doesn't it. I was about 3 miles north of Makena. It looked pretty sketchy the day We went down there. I was told the southern swell was unseasonably big this year. Alot of too and fro underwater. But the memories I have from those reefs will keep me happy for a while. Just Breathtaking. And if you get the chance to go to other spots, very diverse. I wanted to hit Olawalu, but it just didn't happen. I'd love to see any pics of it you might have. I wish I'd made the drive back to Black Rock. That place is SICK!!!! for snorkling.

Thanks for the input, and LOVE your "Interests"

It sure does suck to be back. I just can't seem to get back into my normal life yet. The life style we had in Hawaii was addicting. We are already talking about going back next year.

You didn't miss much at Olawalu. I had read it was a great place for snorkeling. Abundant fish and corals. We were out over a hundred yards and only saw a few fish and no corals. The ocean was so rough we gave up and went back to shore.

The link below was great for researching dive sites in Hawaii. I hope it helps someone out.

My picture taking abilities under water aren't great but here are a few I took at Makena.

Desjavous

Looks framilliar

Yeah, I'd love to go back. We've been twice now and I just love it there. The flights are a bit long from the east coast and the jet lag's a beast. I was falling asleep in my dinners out there, and wide awake at 3am. Small price to pay.
