Max allowable magnesium levels?

Im thinking at having my mag levels in the 1400 range. Is this good? What's the highest healthy level magnesium can go up to?

Mine is up at 1450 with no problems, and I've heard of people going up to the 1600s when fighting green hair algae. Check randy's article in ReefKeeper Magazine, past articles, chemistry, and magnesium articles or reef parameter articles will have more info.

Any benefits from having magnesium higher than the recommended 1250-1350?

Good question. I'll check back to learn the answer.

I've had mine at 1900 with Kent Tech M and it killed all the hair algae in my tank. I tried DT's brand mag first and it did nothing.

I keep mine at 1600 - 1800 just in case...

Aquaman, did you notice any fading colors in your zoas? This is the only side effect of high mg I have ever heard of.

I THINK I have seen it in my own tank (at around 1800ppm), but can't be sure. If I ever have to elevate my mg again (for bryopsis) I will take detailed before-and-after pics of my zoas so I'll know for sure.

Either way, I'll take slightly faded zoas over bryopsis anytime!;)

Okay, I have a salifert Magnesium test kit that reads up to 1500 ppm. Is there a trick to be able to read up to 1900 ppm or do I need a test kit that reads that high.

Look at the chart in the instructions for the test kit. You can figure out how much Mg rises with each mL added. Refill the syringe, keep adding drops, and extrapolate on the chart.

I'd give you the precise answer if I wasn't at work and could look at the kit. :)
