Maxi-Jet question

Does anyone know how to initiate/use the venturi aeration function of a standard Maxi-Jet? I've hooked up the appropriate "flow deflector" tube with the hose attachment, but the pump simply pushes water up that hose (even tried a longer hose completely upright-right angle to water line). It doesn't suck in air, yet alone aerate the water. I have used the turbo venturi attachment on a bigger Maxi-Jet in the past, but I do not believe that they manufacture such a device for the smaller ones (I'm using a 600). I've called the Technical Support line at Aquarium Systems and of course no one picks up. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

what depth do you have it mounted? I've found it can't be more then a few inches down, otherwise it creates zero venturi effect, and turns into just another outlet.

Hey Gresh,

Thanks for the insight. This might be the cause as I have mine about 5 or more inches below the water line. Dang it! I might have to reconfigure it to move it higher. Thanks!

In testing one yesterday I got finer bubbles by inserting a piece of airline tubing part way into the MJ's intake. In this way the bubbles get chopped up by the impeller.

I had a 5" piece of 5/8" ID vinyl tubing attached to the MJ's intake (pump upside down with intake facing the surface) and then put the airline into the vinyl tubing a few inches.

There is a range of airflow to water flow that is important. If the air is not getting sucked in you may need to restrict the air intake slightly. The smaller the pump (less water flow), the less air flow you can have.

As a quick fix, try bending your airline over on itself to restrict the air. Maybe a zip tie to hold it. If that works, you can get an airline valve or a speedfit fitting from Lowes/HD for adjustments to the airflow.
