Maxima detachment

I have a maxima that has started detaching from the rock it is on. It's still extending its mantle fine and doesn't look horribly unhappy, but it's now at about a 45 degree angle. My question: does it need help detaching or should I leave it alone? (I'd rather have it off of the rock it's on, honestly. It's sharing a rock with a galaxea and I'm starting to worry about sweeper tentacles. They're fine now, but I'm worried about future problems.) Or, should I prop it up so that it doesn't have the stress on its foot?

Thanks for your help!

If you are really unhappy with where it is and since it is on its way off the rock might as well give it a hand. Slice the foot off with a razor and replace it somewhere else.

Thanks. I think I'm about forced to that. Here's a photo:

DO NOT slice the foot off!!!!

cut the byssal threads as far away from the clam as you can.

Here's a post-op photo. All that I cut were white threads and I Xacto'd them right at the rock face. It's not happy with me, but it's starting to come out again. I wouldn't be happy with me either.

I might be wrong but your shell makes the clam look like a Crocea, my teardrop maxima has distinctive ridges on the shell and the scoops were bigger all the way down the shell.

Thanks, anydarnthing. I'll go and check that out. I was going off the information of the person whose tank I took over on his way out of the hobby. Mine's pretty smooth from the bottom up to the scoops.

BTW, the clam looked stressed last night but is extended fully tonight. Hopefully there won't be any secondary infection and the clam and galaxea can both live happily ever after.
