well my small maxima will not stay attacheed to a rock anywhere i put it. it wants to be in the sand. i even tried a rock under the sand and it just moved over a little and started to burrow in the sand. what if anything should i do? just let it stay in the sand or keep trying to get it to attach to the rock?

I have three crocea. One refuses to stay on rocks of any type or placement, like you describe your maxima is doing, one is happy on a rock, and the thrid looks to be moving off the rock. I too have heard that the sand is not the best place for these two types of clams, but I guess the clam didn't hear the same advise. ;)

crocea and maxima clams are rock loving clam. I find my smaller ones tend to move around. if its happy in the sand I would just leave it alone eventually it should find a place where it's happy and attach it self.

IME Maxima clams do well in either or situation. I personally keep an extremely shallow sand bed for aesthetic purposes only (approx 1/2") in which case I do not require using a piece of rock under the sand for the clam to attach to. Rather, the clam just adheres to the glass bottom of the aquarium.

When placed on the rock work, I tend to put the clam in a shallow divot (it is extremely important not to jam the clam into a tight space where it can not open comfortably/fully) so that the clam is slightly cradled to allow it to attach without being knocked over or bumped off the rock work.

Keep in mind a clam may not always attach where you want it to - but the fact of the matter is, it will always attach where it is most comfortable. The clam generally knows better then you about where it wants to be. I do not recommend constantly relocating a clam unless it is putting itself in immediate and/or inevitable danger.
