I am in the process of setting up my 125 reef and was wondering what the maximum temp you guys let your reef tank get too. I have a chiller but need to take electicity into consideration and don't want to break the bank on my electric bil.
Thanks in advance.

I've ran my 55G tank for about 9 months with 82-84F with no ill effects. Most animals will acclimate to any temperature, as long as it is stable. But when you go 86F or above coraline algea will start to bleach (die). Also, higher temperature water can hold less oxygen. So, now I run my tank at 78-80.

Cheers,

I say the max constant tep is 83.

If your heater fails or something then your tank could probrobly survive at 87 for a short time.

If it hits 84, I'll start taking measures to get the temp down. I like to keep mine at 80F, which it is normally +/- 0.5 degree of. Constant 81-82F is o.k., but if it spikes higher, then real trouble can happen.

steve671,

as you can see many different opinion,

mine, it depend...

in my experience, if you keep your tank at 78-80 and one day you hit 84, things in the tank can bleach, ect

but if you keep your tank at 82-83, then if one day hit 84, things will be ok

in other words, stability is the key, not so much 77 or 81, ect...based on eric borneman, the highest is 86, while the lowest is 77, and the average is 82

so if you keep your tank around 82 you will be fine,

sam
