maxspect gyre 150

I bought a gyre 150 for my 125 gallon a few months ago and its running at 60% and moving a ton of water. If i turn it up past that the overflow starts to gurgle. I thik its because of the waves it makes. Im running a Herbie overflow with 1" pipe. Is anyone else using these pumps?

I ended up getting another 1 and now I'm down to about 40% and it still seamed to be blowing around. I don't want to lower them to much and have to little flow but I don't want sand blowing around either. Are you running yours at the top of the tank?

I run gyres with dual herbie overflows, and the water level in the overflows does fluctuate with the waves that are produced. I raised the level in the overflows a bit by decreasing the flow with the gate valve. The water in the overflows went up about an inch and does not make any noise with the fluctuations.

I just adjusted my gate valve... Perfect, thank you

I have 2 Gyre X-150's in my 150G. One one each side of the overflow. Both are controlled via the ice-cap module on Apex. Max speed is set for 50% and they ramp up and down through the day and sleep at 20%. Mine are attached to the euro-brace and virtually disappear in the tank. JP

I like your setup, and its similar to my vertical gyre. Some people scoffed when I said the gyre is almost invisible in the tank, but they aren't very visible near the water line with all the motion they create. I have vertical gyres in the corners by my overflows as well.

Is your 150g a peninsula tank? If so, how does the flow of the gyre compare to any other powerhead option that you have used before? I currently have two Tunze and am contemplating going to two Gyre or WAVs.

My tank is a 150G tall. 48WX24X30T. The Gyre's push toward the front glass and create a good bit of turbulence on the surface, and a good amount of agitation in a rolling front-down-back-upwards flow. If I ran them 100% they would blow my substrate around and irritate my LPS. I started my tank with Tunzes and changed to MP-40's for a smaller foot print and controllability. I moved the MP-40s onto the back wall for ease of cleaning and aesthetics. The right side MP-40 became too much of a jet blast on a couple of my acros and I replaced it with a Gyre. I kept the other 2 MP-40's on the left wall since I could control those with the Apex. When the Ice Cap module came out I replaced those two MP-40s with another Gyre. It was mostly an appearance factor but these Gyre's do move more water with a broader output. I liked all the previously mentioned power heads, these just look better (more camouflaged) and keep any cords/equipment away from the sides of the tank. Here is a cell phone picture of the tank. I believe the Gyre's to provide the best flow in my tank vs. footprint with preferred placement/location. The flow action on the front glass causes some vortices and bubbles but I think it benefits oxygenation of the DT. Hope this helps. JP

I was thinking of trying mine mounted to the back wall. I like that they are hidden more than 1 on each side. Are you running them on opposite pulses?

They are set to run on the same schedule or same pulse. I'm going to try opposite but everything is doing fine as is. JP

I've been running mine on opposite pulse without a controller and it seems to be working well. There is a 1 or 2 second period where they are both on and making tremendous turbulence. I have them running at 40% and it's not blowing the sand around anymore.

Mine has not been set up long but my Gyre definitely over powers the MP40 on the opposite end of the tank

I ran it vertically for a while but it blows the sand around too much, I think maybe once the sand gets a biofilm on it I will try vertical again....although my vertical placement was in the front so that it would blow a sheet of water directly across the front glass down the length of the tank. Anway I run it at 100% with a 30 min forward, 30 min reverse pattern and simple outlet control of the apex (not the ice cap) which gives an extended period of being shurt off during the night for a while.

So far its not too much for the overflow but I do suspect will end up being too much for LPS corals. On the one hand its the perfect amount of flow for my 6 foot long 27 inch wide tank but on the other....its probably too much flow and will limit my ability to place lps corals in the top 1/3 of the tank or in the front 1/3 of the tank if I mount vertically.

I may be one of the weird ones who ends up dumping the gyre in favor of a bunch of pumps that move less water all doing random things and pointing in different directions.

I won't know for a few months though. I think having 2 gyres set at lower settings facing each other and on the controller might also be another option.

JPorter, I am considering doing the same setup on my 60" 150g. Are you running two ice-caps or just one??? Also, just forward or in reverse too?

2 ice caps, forward only. I haven't played with them much since it seems fine the way I have them set now, and I really haven't had the time to do so. My biggest like is the way the placement allows me complete access to the sides for cleaning. You can't even see the cords due to the way my euro-brace is. JP
