MaxSpect Gyre XF150 VS TUNZE Wavebox 6208

I am trying to decided between the MaxSpect Gyre XF150 and a TUNZE Wavebox 6208. I have about 5 Hydor Koralia in my 225 gallon mix reef tank and I am looking at adding one of these to add some current to my tank. I plan to still use the Hydors for random and directed flow but want some left/right movement. I am open to any other options but want to stay around $300. I am moving in a year and plan on upgrading the tank so don't want to put to much money into this one.

Thanks,

Here's my experiences with them.

The Gyre moves a lot of water but they jam very easily with small snails like Euplica sp. When this happens it usually breaks a blade or jams the motor.

The old Tunze waveboxes had an issue with the cord from the motor block. The insulation gets brittle and cracks or rips if your not extremely careful when you reassemble it after cleaning.

Wave surge also puts more stress on the aquarium seams.

Cheers,
Tim

I am leaning towards the Gyre and what you stated has been the only main concern I've heard. I need to revive my clean up crew soon because right now I just have 4 baseball sized turbo snails and some crabs, so I'll just stay away from the small snails.

The way they move water is completely different. the wave box sloshes the entire water column back and forth. The Gyre is directional flow thats suppose to move the entire water column. Tunze is a proven method and pump, the jury is still out on the relatively new Gyre

I have two 150s on my 300g DD. I have them placed on opposite sides and also opposite corners ie they are not centered on the ends but all the way to one side. I have them on pulsing and at different pulse rates. This creates awesome flow. I know you are only looking at one pump.

I really like the gyre however I have some concerns on build quality. My power cable split and separated from the motor assembly after only 3 months of operation. Coralvue quickly shipped me a new one but I'm very skeptical on build quality.

Does anyone else have any input on these two? I bought the jebco version of the gyre and came home to a snail wedged in the fin. It never worked again. I hear bad things about both of these and wonder if they are worth the money. Just trying to get more currant in my 7' long 210 gal. Thanks

I have been running a maxspect gyre (two of them) since they came out. I don't have dwarf ceriths but do have a billion asterina stars and tiny hard pointy shelled limpets. I've never had my blades jammed.

I have kept up with all the upgraded parts from maxspect which is nice they keep improving on their product. So, I do have the rugged blades now. I also employed a snail and anemone gaurd about a year ago when I added some bubble tip anemones. The new xf2xx series comes with a nice guard now that Im using.

I also have a lot of control over the gyres with my apex with the icecap module which can control both the xf1xx and xf2xx series. I haven't tried the new advanced controller. It can't do what I do with my apex.

I mounted two days ago the XF250 gyre, and closely inspected the new rotor blades. Those things will not jam with any small snails, if I may say. The old rotor blades were thin and brittle, but to jam the new ones it would have to be a big snail, which wouldt pass the blade cage to begin with.
The pump at 20-30% pushed WAY more water around the whole tank than my new MP40QD at 50-60%. Incredible pump from Maxpect.
