I am thinking about getting on of these wrasses. What are your opinions on them in a 50 gallon reef? Only inhabitants are a pair of clowns, saddle puffer (doesnt eat coral), scooter blenny (eating pellets and frozen), and a mandarin (eating pellets and frozen). Also if any of you have pictures of these beautiful fish i would love to see them.

I love this fish! ive tried a couple with no luck. it sounds like it would fit in fine with your fish.

I wish I had a reef safe saddle puffer in my tank!

Wonderful fish. However you need to light acclimate this fish in addition to salinity and temperature. Your mandarin and scooter blenny are not likely to survive together in that size tank in the long run.

they have been together around 6 months and are eating pellets and frozen. They are also fat. Sorry if this is a newbie question but what do you mean "light acclimate"? Does that mean leave the lights on or off, or something else.

Flavum-The valentini is a very funny fish and very brave. While i was rearanging my rock and catching some fish, everybody was hiding except him who was at the front of the tank.

They need to get used to bright lights which means you cannot simply put them in a display tank with MH and run the lights on a normal schedule. Acclimate by running a longer lights off period than normal for about a week while gradually increasing. I am not really sure why that is but it seems to help.

i have one. it lives in a 24 g nano with an orange skunk, a firefish, yellow watchman and a pistol. great fish

I had one that didn't live more than a couple months, but it was a beauty. Here he is in quarantine, so the shot isn't great and it's from a lame camera but even in this condition you can still see some of the colors this guy had.

Yours is gourgeous crt81! Yours too bbauman. This would be my first wrasse having and i have been doing research but i am wondering, is it better to have a male alone, with 1 female or as a harem. I dont think i could do a harem but i could probably do a pair if i can find a female. Are females hard to get.

Snorvich-so i should leave the lights off or on actinics for a couple of days?

I've never really seen a female. I've only seen the males being sold!

I'm not really sure about this, but you may need a bigger tank to house more than one male. But don't trust me on this, i'm not completely sure!!!

i would never get more than 1 male for my tank. I was just wondering if it would be better to have a male by itself or a male with a female.

I am wanting to get one of these myself and will also be housing it with a reef safe Valentini!

I found one place to have a pair but waited too long and the female was sold....regardless I will be getting at least a male soon.

here's a video i have from way back when i had a few. Here they're flashing. cool looking fish but they're jumpers.

Mr A - I have a pair of McCLoskers in a 40 breeder and they are doing great. They eat anything I throw in. The female is smaller and less colorful. One thing though - they are jumpers. And my male jumped right through the egg crate - I wouldn't believe it if I didn't see it. So you'll need a good top. hth.

mine has been over the overflow and down to the sump a few times so you definately need to cover up but hes a great fish - always zooming along the top of the tank with his ray out jaws style.

those are amazing john! did you have a harem? If you did, was it hard to get females? Also, about the jumping, how small of a hole could they get through?

looks alot like the male. I'm sure it doesn't have the high dorsal fin, or does it?

Never seen a female. Just my male was hard to find! And I ordered him!
