So I have a question about the live rock I purchased last week from Marinedepotlive... I had only gotten live rock once before and it was from one of the florida rock dealers and it was beautiful rock -totally covered in life- so that's all I have to compare to at this point.
Last tuesday I ordered 88lbs of fiji uncured rock from mdl and paid extra for overnight shipping and made sure that I picked up the rock from UPS as soon as their counter opened up on Wednesday. I wanted this to be as fresh as possible. To say I was dissappointed is an understatement, there was absolutely no color on the rock (tho I know it might appear in the future), the rock smelled really really bad, and the topper was that it was crawling with maggots...
So I rinsed each peice in a bucket of saltwater and placed it in a big bin with 2 powerheads and heat to allow it to cycle. Holy cow did that start to stink within a day! I thought my neighbor's ferret had crawled into my apartment and died! My question is, is this normal for figi live rock? Is the florida live rock that much better?
Anyway, to top it all off and the reason that I decided to write this post, is that yesterday I checked on the rock after a few days of ignoring it while it cured only to find that some of the maggots must've survived because I have a fruitfly outbreak in the curing bin. Tough little suckers hatched in saltwater...
So is this all normal for live rock and I was just lucky last time?
