Measuring aircraft cable for hanging

I made 2 make shift posts for hanging my AI fixture over my tank, but my problem is that twice ive measured and bought cable and twice they have not worked. The thimble loop and clamps for some reason keep making it difficult to figure out how much cable I need.

Does anyone with more experience with this cable have some advice.

Measure out how much you need, then add two feet. Make your eyes, and then cut the excess off. Aircraft cable can be cut at a hardware store.

I was trying not to have to make a second trip
