Mechanical filtration?

I have a 7g nano. On it, I have a filter that holds two filter cartriges with carbon. I would like to get this tank. Considdering that I am doing weekly 3g water changes on it, is a filter necessary? The only things that I would need to keep in the tank are the heater, powerhead and a bag of carbon/Purigen.

I have considdered this tank because of the built in rear chamber, however I have really taken a liking to tanks that are clear on all four sides.

What to do?

I vote for Tank #2. I use a JBJ 12 gal. for QT and I keep a sponge and those little ceramic donuts in there. It provides flow and filtration and would keep your tank more stable.

Mike I just setup a 4.4g nano/pico. I picked up a rimless cube from ABC in Fairport, for what I consider CHEAP. For $50 I also got an Ecoxotic clamp on LED fixture. I used a Koralia Nano for flow and thats all thats in there. Because I'm using this as a temperate water setup, I have no heater in it. Current livestock are 2 Waratah nems, a Fire Shrimp and a Bluefin Damsel, (temporary).

B/c I do 50% wc's weekly and the desire for a "clean" look without extra accessories, I decided to forego mechanical filtration.

Eileen, what you said is exactly why this would be a great tank. On the other hand, Justin, I love the "see through" effect of your tank. I like the eco tanks... they are very simple, but easy on the eyes... like me :)

Also, I'm still having the lighting dilema. Are there any opinions regarding the LED strips like this one? A blue and a white would sit over my tank nicely.

Next issue... I have always been pro open top tanks. However, with this little nano guy, I like having the cover on it. I know that there won't be any jumpers this way. But, on the flip side, I know how important gas exchange is. It's not completely sealed off but it is definately covered. A new rimless tank would eliminate the cover completely though.

So, in summary, which tank? Which lights? Top or sans top? (although, topless is nice )
