Medicating Wrasses in Quarantine Tank

I have lost many wrasses over the past 6 months to prazi and copper. Even at lower doses. I would have to say having had this experience and reading all the posts.. many of them. I am no longer treating prazi or copper with fairy or flashers. I to can report that in some cases I simply QT them.. no prazi no copper and for week did great and eat and no signs of any ick or other issues.. then because of my routine of prazi then copper I gave prazi a try to be safe before putting them into the DT. Lost every time. Lost a few rhomboids and other great wrasses..

I'm almost afraid to post this, because of my terrible luck with wrasses I don't want to jinx myself *knock on wood*

The three wrasses I referred to in my post above made it through QT using TTM and General Cure. They've been in my DT for 2 months and seem really healthy. The wrasse I was concerned about after the General Cure is just a very skittish fish, so I'm not sure if the General Cure was causing the behavior or if he was just sick of being in the QT tank.

I have treated a bunch of wrasse of different genera with copper and they have done very well. I would happily treat most wrasse with a gently ramped up dose.

I do recall having a rubriventralis with ich I tried to fix with hyposalinity. DOwn went the salinity to 1.009, fish clears up, salinity up and the ich reappeared. After three cycles of that I got bored and used copper to fix it

Joe - You can also only go to 0.4 PPM. However, I would say best bet would be tank transfer if you can next time.

well. as I said I am no longer QT wrasses and treating with copper or prazi. I added some fairy wrasses last night to the DT.
I did give them a short safety stop treatment which is two baths. one fromolin and other blue meth. then into tank.. they looked to be very healthy and doing well.. I just lost too many to prazi and copper even at low levels. the issue with copper at low levels is ineffective. At higher levels. wrasses will not tolerate.. then add into the mix that reading the color charts is not always on the dot..

Just my 2 cents. Hats off to those who have treated with prazi or copper with no issues for fairy wrasses.. I have lost to many ..

Same here. All wrasse that I have went through a 6-7 week quarantine with a dose of prazipro followed by 5 weeks of cupramine at a 0.35-0.40 ppm concentration. All 4 wrasse I currently have (lineatus, solerensis, naoko's, and carpenters) didn't skip a beat with the medication, staying just as active with voracious appetites. I attribute it to the fact my quarantine tank has been set up and been running continuously for over a year with new biological filtration/media added from my DT regularly (foam sponge from sump). I never have ammonia or nitrite present with minimal nitrates which I think does wonders for the wrasse.

My first foray into wrasse was pretty disheartening, I had about a 50% survival through QT rate. I was having to do frequent water changes to keep the ammonia levels down which when combined with the medication they were receiving caused a lot of my problems I was having.

... but I run Seachem Stability everyday in QT...

It's cheap at Petsmart and lasts a long time.

After reading this I'm scared to treat my red head Solon fairy wrasse. It's in my quarantine for 2 days. Eating great! Should I do Prazipro all in one dose or increase slowly over 2-3 days?

So far I have 4 fish in quarantine. Tank is 30 gallon.

I'm planning to let them get use to the QT for a few more days before doing Prazipro. Do I have to add Prazipro all in one dose?

From what I heard the medication for Prazipro is only viable for 3 days? If adding it every other day would that cause any problems?


So far everyone is eating. Tang is a little picky but I'll get some nori for it soon.

Add Prazipro in one dose - 5ml per 20gal as instructed. It only stays in solution for 72 hours or so, but there is no benefit to dosing more than once every 5-7 days. It takes only a few hours for parasites to drop off after dosing. The reason to apply another dose after 5-7 days is to ensure any eggs that were present have hatched and can be eliminated by the second dosage.

Wrasses can be particularly sensitive to overdosage, so best to follow the manufacturer's suggested dosage.

I've treated about 15 wrasses of 4 different genera over the last two years with Prazipro and haven't lost a single one. Those of you having problems, do you have plenty of surface agitation in your QT? Prazi can cause a bacterial bloom which can lower O2 concentrations significantly if you don't have some way to keep your dissolved O2 level up.

Only time I had problems personally was accidentally doubling the dosage. Wrasse (P. filamentosus) was visibly stressed with rapid breathing and somewhat catatonic behavior. Realized it several hours later, did a 50% water change and wrasse was fine. Haven't had any problems with standard dosage, apart from somewhat reduced appetite on occasion. I have an Exquisite (C. exquisitus) in QT right now, and so far his first Prazi treatment hasn't affected him at all.
