Medication in tank question

So my file fish has some kind of mouth fungus. I wanted to know if you have run api e.m. Erythromycin in your entire tank..? I have other fish and corals also anemone. I would like to put in my HT but I have been unlucky to catch him at this time. my LFS said it would be ok to run in entire system. I want to check first.

It's fine up to a point. Erythromycin is the active ingredient in something called "chemiclean" that's used to temporarily knock back red slime cyanobacteria. But erythro is a broad-spectrum antibiotic, and can have deleterious effects on the bacterial filtration base of your tank. At the very least, you may see your skimmer go nuts, so it may be a good idea to monitor it closely so that it doesn't overflow.

I believe most nitrifying bacteria is gram negative and emythromycin isn't as effective/devistating on it as it is on gram positive bacterias.

So as long as you are following the recommended dosing information then there should be little effect on the "beneficial" bacteria in our tanks...
