Meeting Update for Nov 17th

KING LEAR
Due to the lack of interest in this DIY meeting and only 6 people paying for a reactor the club has choosen to cancel this project. We tried to wait as long as possible to cancel in hopes of more people sending in there money but that didn't happen.

George Webber, Geo, will still becoming to the meeting to do a Impromptu discussion on working with acrylic. This is not something hes done before but it will be a great meeting for everyone to learn about how bonds work and how to cut and join pieces together from one of the best in the business. It will be a great meeting to get all your qustions answered too.

Hope to see you all there, this should still be a fun hands on meeting!
Those that paid already, you'll get a refund at the meeting.
Thanks Again Geo for helping out, we really Appreciate it!

Very Dissapointing....

Very Dissapointing....

Where are all the club members who said DIY was something they wanted to learn??? And why couldn't we do it for the 6 of us that paid? It would have been a learning experince for everyone anyway.

Yeah, lots of I want to but knowone seemes to have the money to do it. And with 6 people doing it out of what 40 or so people that show up at meetings isn't fair to the rest of the people either. What it also boils down to is what are you really going to learn at that meeting, use cleaner first, then glue and twist. Thats about all there is to pvc, acrylic is a different story though and hopefully will be more usefull info to the masses.
Sorry there wasn't more interest in the DIY type meetings, these type of meetings will be looked at in a different way from now on.

That is exactly why I didn't sign up for this DIY project. I already know how to work with PVC and there is not much that I can learn from gluing some caps on the pre-drilled tubes. You just changed my mind about attending this meeting FOR SURE. I want to learn new things and learning from GEO is a great opportunity. I appreciate George taking the time to help with this and hope he is not ticked off about the lack of interest in the fluidized bed reactor project. I just didn't need one and had nothing to learn from it. If it were a calcium reactor that was being built there is a lot about them I don't know and it would have been more interesting to me (but probably less than 6 other people)

Thanks Erik for working on the project and still finding something to make the meetings worth attending. Don't get me wrong, I still like to meet and talk with the other members and drink pop but it is over an hour drive to the zoo for me. I also think I had sticker shock from the $50 PVC reactor. :)

Erik, I was wondering why my check hadn't been cashed yet... If you still didn't cash it, just VOID it and tear it up.

Thanks!

all checks were deposited so I will refund the money at the meeting or mail out a check it that will work better for you.
Erik

If you want to do something like this again it needs to be better planed and started alot sooner then we did CORA had a 3 mounth lead time on theres and they were firm on what they were doing you new what you were building and what it would cost and had plenty of time to get your money in

This was planned before I took over last month, and is only are third meeting this year. The real problem is people say they want to but don't come up with the cash to do it. Thats All, we new what we were building for over a month, we new the cost was going to be 40-50 dollars and we new all the parts as a parts list was posted.
Either the media reactor wasn't the best idea, the other 2 had been done already, or we just don't have the same kind of money flow in the area. 11 people claimed to want to mail me or paypal me money, 4 actually did. and 2 paid at last months meeting when the money was actaully due by. I will try my hardest NOT to plan one of these meetings again. To many headaches for nothing.
Erik

IMO the club just isn't large enough to have a DIY project that was so specific --- media reactor that was only cost effective if you have a 300g+ system.

Please don't get discouraged Erik, hopefully there is a way to make the DIY meetings work.

I'm guilty. I did indicate I was interested and would send a check. My wife had to fly to Dallas this week and I chose to cancel and stay home to watch my baby girl. I suppose this is a numbers game. If you need a minimum of 12 participants, you might expect to have a dozen show if you have about 35 show interest. A little more lead time would be appreciated by all. I certainly do appreciate your patience and effort Kevin. Like MJAnderson says... Please don't get discouraged. A couple suggestions:

1. Start planning DIY projects at least 2.5 months in advance with complete information including cost, time, location, and exactly what it is we would be learning to build complete with a representative picture or two like this:

http://corareef.org/images/event_images/792kalkenstein.jpg

2. Collect all username information into a text file of everyone who has expressed interest. PM everyone on that list with updates and reminders on a few occasions.

3. Make a payment amount and deadline known to all. Try to make this payment due date as close to the meeting dates as possible.

4. Create a little buzz. GEO tends to put together some quality reef tank reactors/equipment. Let a few pictures and descriptions sell the DIY project. Many folks thought we were going to meet to glue together some cheap PVC pieces. I bet George would send you a picture and description. He seems resourceful to say the least.

5. Lastly, solicit a little help. I will volunteer to help organize a DIY event. Please ask. I'd like to work with you toward this effort.

All good points. And there all easier said then done though. It looks great written down but its hard to make them a reality when your on a short time frame. This meeting was cancelled because of not enough people paying that said they would. if you go back to the original thread theres alot of people saying yes and a few asking for multiple ones.

If we had atleast 10 it would have been worth it to do though. I think the back up meeting will be better and more informative then the DIY one imo. Nothing like a scramble at the last minute and coming up with a better meeting!

This is how I invision a DIY meeting working out well

1. At the last meeting of the year, discuss the DIY project for next year.

2. During the down time in the summer, gather all the information and costes for the project.

3. First meeting of the year present all the info and payment deadlines, set up paypal and such too.

4. Collect the money by the next meeting

5 have the Project the following month.

That was not a shot at you Erik I was just saying what went wrong I Enjoy the DIY stuff so I want these things to happen

I understand Tom I didn't take it that way, I wanted to do this meeting too. I agree with the comments too. Its harder than it looks to get a group of people to agree on anything really let alone what to build and when. I tried with the time frame we had but just couldn't collect the money to make it happen. I was half way to columbus when Chuck and I decided that 6 people doing the meeting vs. 40 or so people there wasn't fair to the rest of the club.

If people still really want to do this, maybe we could plan it for a saturday at my house. I know how to build them and we could do it in a few hours at my place as a side option to not letting everyone down.?

EriK,

I'd be interested in a Saturday DIY at your place if there's an open invitation. You might blast a PM out to everyone who expressed interest. I bet you could come up with 10 folks with a second effort. Let me know if I can help in any way. Also, if your DIY meeting is a "go" publish a date and a deadline to send a check.

Steve

Hello all,

I appreciate being invited to your meeting. We are going to talk about working with acrylic, and keep it focused on building items with a minimum of special tooling.
We will touch on tools required, building a tank, and using templates to cut shapes. I have plenty of pictures to go through the steps and will be happy to answer questions afterwards.

See you all Friday :)

Looking forward to meeting you Geo. I am sure it will still be a great meeting. Thanks Eric for your efforts, I am sure we will find a DYI project that will fly.........maybe not on a Friday night though. An alternative DYI meeting may have to be scheduled for a weekend day and be a supplement to a Friday night meeting. Thanks again!

Due to my Birthday today and a surprise out of town trip starting a day early I won't be able to make it to the meeting. If you paid for the reactor please pm me your address and full name so I can mail you out a check on monday. Thank you
Erik
