Melafix Primfix nightmare

Hi all

my 55 tank had a pair of clowns, an antenna lion and basalette, xenia, clove polyps, blue star fish and spiny lobster. its been a steady system for about 4 months. I do a five gallon water change every Sunday and test water parameters. Nitrates are the only parameter i has issues with, but usually remain steady around 40-60.

I added two B Cardinals last week. i did not use a quarantine tank because i'm STUPID AND LAZY.

within one week, my lion fish had cloudy eyes. i did as much research i could on what i could use. I took him out, put him in a quarantine 15 gallon tank, lowered salinity slowly and he got better in a few days.
I put him back.

The next day his eyes were cloudy again, and one of the clown fish had white dots, but not icky dots, more like velvety spots. I fed garlic dosed silversides and raw shimp to the lion. and garlic soaked formula one to the clowns and cardinals.

One week later, the lion stopped eating. Bassaeltte dissapeared. added garlic to the tank direct. Tail fins on lion and carnidals seem to be rotting away.No improvement.

SO finally last night went for the Melafix, Pimafix medication.
Within minutes of putting it in, 5ml per 10 gallons. Turnbo snails dropped off the glass, and appear dead, clove polyps curled up in a terrible way. After a few hours i observed the sand sifting snails withering in agony. some of them twisting and turning on the sand with their bodies stretching out of their shells.

This morning one of my clowns are dead, last carnidal is as good as gone, and the lion no better. All snails are lying upside down on the sand. (don't know if they are dead). I have some pics of the snails which i will post once i get a chance.

and to top it off. my condo smells of bay leaves(primafix) . which is gross.

WHats OK? The hermits, the Zenia (battered but still pulsing)
Whats not looking good? The lobster, the startfish, the lionfish, the tiny feather dusters on the LR.
Whats dead? The cardinal, the clown fish all the snails. possibly the clove polyps.

This morning i turned my Rena back on, and i assume the activated carbon started absorbing the medication. cause the tanks seemed to pick up a bit.

1)Has anyone else had these problems with Melafix Primafix?
2)Did i do something wrong? Too strong a dose?/ Shouldnt combine them?
3) what should i do now? I ,mixed 15 gallons of water this morning and have it aerating. plan on doing a change later today. Or should i just keep dosing with it as the bottles say.

Thanks in Advance, Its been a terrible last few days.
Nicholas.

First off, never, EVER medicate in your main tank. Regardless of what the label says, NO MEDICATION IS SAFE for the display tank. The ones that don't hurt the tank, obviously doesn't hurt the parasites either. Qting one fish until they show no signs is useless and probably more harmful to the fish. ALL fish need to QT'd. Treatment needs to last at least 4-8 weeks depending on treatment. Companies that sell meds either intend it to be used in the QT or they intend to sell you stuff that doesn't work and they prey on the aquarist's hopes that they don't have to go through QT. The water change should help, I'm not familiar with that treatment so I can't say the best way to get it out of your system. Probably a series of small waterchanges every couple of days. Not sure either the long-term effects it will have on your inverts, the ones that survive anyway.
QTing all of your fish at one time is as simple as Qting one but there is a lot more maintenance involved. More frequent water changes, ph swings etc. It can be done, people do it everyday. Don't loose heart. It may seem like a long time to stare at an empty display tank for 6 to 8 weeks. But the benefits are endless. Also, after QT anything wet must also go through QT as well. wont need to treat rock, sand, inverts or alga but they too need to be in a separate tank for 4 weeks.

Assuming that everything dies.
will that that 6-8 weeks, ensure that all fish Parasites die- due to not having a host to live on? AND will that allow all bacterial infecti8ons to die off as well??

In the main display yes, that time will ensure that the parasites will die, the bacterial infections on the fish may need to be treated with an anti-bacterial. Take caution though because the bacterial infection is more than likely gram-negative and treated with a gram-negative antibacterial. And the concern would be that the gram-negative meds will kill a lot of your benificial bacteria which is also gram-negative. During the treatment of both the parasites and the bacterial infections you must check water parms frequently I would say twice a day and do water changes and buffering accordingly. The parasites will naturally also needed to be treated in some form whether Hypo which is my preferred method or another treatment of your choice.
