Metal Halide Safety?

I'm considering buying a 20K halide but have no shielded fixture.

So was wondering how many folks here have had their halide explode. If so, was it the outer glass or did the inner arc tube blow, and any other relevant details (bulb type, ballast, orientation), thanks!

I've run single end halides without a shield, no explosions.

I have had a mean she-devil clownfish bite me, then jerk my hand back right into the burning hot bulb. Not fun.

On my 450 I had 4 400w halides, never had one crack, fail, or explode. They were about 8-10" above the water

SE Bulbs don't require a shield, some reflectors have them ( LumenBrights ).
DE do require a shield.

Like stated above if its a DE bulb you need UV sheilded glass or you will fry your tank with the UV.
