Hello to all

This Dottieback has been in a QT tank for about 1 week, with a Bi color gobie.
I started to notice a slight light brown marking on it's side, & it has developed to a larger area.

Any Idea's as to what it is & what to treat it with would be appreciated.

Also,
Should I leave the gobie in the QT when treating the Dottieback, or place it in the display ?

Both fish are active & eating flake & mysis shrimp.

Thanks for a reply !!!

It looks like the begining of a bacterial infection. Remove to quarantine and treat with Furan2 or Maracyn2 for 7-10 days.

Thanks for the reply Percula9

I went to the LFS for some meds, but unfortunately when I returned home the Dottyback was lost.

I am now wondering about the Bi color goby that was in the QT with the Dottyback. Should I treat the goby as a precaution ?

Thanks for a reply

Do you have a UV running in a QT?

With a UV of the correct size running at the correct flow rate, incidents of external bacterial infection is reduced, I say by 70% or more.

Other than UV I do not treat for bacterial infection before seeing infection. I do not add antibiotics preventively.

But for ich I treat to eradicate regardless of state of infestation. I always assume that a new fish has ich. Ich is indeed different; it should be eradicated.

No, I do not use a UV in my QT, I do have one on the display running about 5 gph.
I have a 10 gal QT with a Whisper HOB filter.
I use a filter bag that has been conditioned in my sump for 2~3 weeks prior, as a bio /filter. Heater, BB, some Pvc for a hiding place , & a 5000k daylight florescent.

Sounds like a good idea for the QT, I'll look into a small one for it

As Always

What wattage of UV do you have?

I think most people tend to run their UV at too high a flow rate, but 5 GPH cannot be right. 5 GPH per watt is more like it.

When your UV runs this slowly, even with 100% kill per pass the rate of kill overall is still too slow, IMO.

Thanks for the info.
I am using an 8~9 watt. on a 50 gal. display.
Do you recommend that the flow should be around 40 ~ 50 gph?

Thanks again

I go by 8-10 GPH per watt for the older concentric circle design UV.
