MH and Rics ?

I know MH are okay for rics, but in a shallow tank when does it become a problem (too much). I am setting up a ric frag tank that will be 13" tall (27G Long). I have never used MH, but need to buy a new light and was wondering if that would too close for a ric under a MH? I realized I can raise it up, but it will have cabinets above it that will limit that as well. If I cannot keep if 4" or so off the top I will just go with T5. thougts...experiences?

LED's still too pricey for me at this time, so it will be T5 or MH.

Idk about MH but I had my rics about 14-18 inches down under my LEDs and they seemed ok but once I moved them to 23 inches under water they took off. I imagine the MH might be too much that shallow.

depends on the wattage of the lamp. 150W with 13" of water below it shouldn't be a problem with most Rics, but 250W or 400W might require some acclimation.
