MH bulb explode !!!!!!!!

I've been using this MH bulb(XM 10k) for nearly 6 months with no problem at all then last week i don't know what was really going on the bulb exploded. Anyone know how this is happening. :(

did you turn it on soon after it was turned off? MH's need proper time to cool off before being turned on. I know of a few people who've blown MH's by not giving them enough time to cool properly.

XM's are prone to cracking at the slightest water splash.

Knowing that I'll never buy them....

I wouldnt wanna deal with them blowing up...

They generally don't explode, but just crack or split in two. I had one that looked like a glass cutter completely cut right around the circumference of the outer envelope.

Sorry John misread your post. I had an 10K XM SE crack on me to a few year ago. With hearing that this is common I am guessing the glass is thinner on these bulbs. If I were to run them again I would use a Lumenarc with the glass shield to prevent water splashes from getting to the bulb.

If only the outer glass breaks that will be emitting a lot of UV and can really burn your corals in short order. Some suggest running glass shields on all MH fixtures. I've sent back two XM's in the past from multiple imperfections in the outer envelope. They seem to have a problem with bubbles in the glass to varying degrees. Those might be a problem and might not but I don't see them as much in higher priced bulbs.

I've never had my XM10K SE bulb break when water gets splashed on them. And it happens a lot.

DE HQI bulbs are microporous From what I remember.

We used HQI bulbs in theater lighting and you cannot touch the lamp itself. You can actually clog the pores with oil from your skin which reduces the ability of the glass to evaporate heat and exhaust.

If it got anything on it, hairspray, cologne, skin oils, saltwater, it might have caused it.

Agree, this has happen to me. The breakage on the MH doesn't happen immediately, but the oils reduce the life of the bulb tremedously. I use the medical or painter latex gloves when changing MH bulbs.

I would bet on water, the external bulb temp is real real high, and the shock cooling of 80F water will cause it to shatter.

it's the single end bulb, i think it shouldn't be the water splash that caused the bulb explosion cuz there's the glass shield cover.
I'm starting to concern about the quality of the bulb itself. The previous bulb that i had didn't explode but it only worked for a couple months.
