Agree, this has happen to me. The breakage on the MH doesn't happen immediately, but the oils reduce the life of the bulb tremedously. DE HQI bulbs are microporous From what I remember.
We used HQI bulbs in theater lighting and you cannot touch the lamp itself. You can actually clog the pores with oil from your skin which reduces the ability of the glass to evaporate heat and exhaust.
If it got anything on it, hairspray, cologne, skin oils, saltwater, it might have caused it.
