what's a good hight for a 250watt MH 14k pendant off the top of the water in a 30gal deep tank i order to have the most productive growth of sps corals and beginer corals?.

I asked nearly the same question last week and it looks like 5" to 6" is the norm!!

It all depends on the coral type and their placement. Mine are set at 8inches. It penentrates the depth great and doesnt quite heat up the water that much. This way my chiller isnt constantly running. I would start off with 8 inches and adjust it as neeeded.

my tank is only 30gals deep, and i dont have a chiller

Anywhere from 6-12 inches would be fine. Monitor your tank temp as you may need to add a fan across the top. What kind of corals do you have or plan to have?

i want acropora,galaxea,star polyps and zoanthids to grow happy in there.

10" is the norm from everyone I talked to. Granted, I am using 400W bulbs. I would still stay at about 10" from the surface even with 250W bulbs. Make sure you leave enough room to be able to get into your tank.
