So which is better perpendicular or parallel with mounting MHs...

I have them perpendicular right now...

some person at a LFS told me Parallel gives more spread from the bulbs...

SO what is the more advantageous....????

to the front of the tank I assume you mean? It depends greatly on the reflector I would say. However, if you mount them perpendicular and have a proper reflector you can get good spread. The only problem is that a lot of the light will exit the front and rear glass. Think of the light emitting part of the bulb as a single point, no matter how you orient the bulb, the point is still emitting the same amount in all directions (only directin it doesnt emit is back onto the socket if you have single end).

I think you are talking about the SE screw in bulb and orienting filament?.......meaning the loop parallel to the water versus straight up and down.

Kinda sound like indexing spark plugs to me......but if thats what your talking about.....id say parallel would be more advantagous....but how much would be hard to quanitify.....if you have a bulb over a wide tank...then maybe, but if you have a narrow tank, why pay to light the carpet or wall?
