MH photo period idea

Given that MH bulbs are supposed to be replace every 8-12 months, if I reduce my (2 x 250W HQI) MH burn time to 2 hours a day with 8 hours of supplemental actinic/red T5 HO (4 x 54W) lighting would the bulbs "last" for say 18 months?

Thanks,

PJ

It is not a "given" that you need to replace your MH bulbs that often. It is widely held that you should, but not all bulbs are created equal and there are a lot of things in this hobby that are thought of as "given" and the reality is that isn't so. There was a test done on the Phoenix that showed you could easily get 16 months and more out of them.

The only real way to know if the bulbs you have will last would be with a par meter. You are correct that a shorter burn time will prolong the life of the bulb. Questioning the things we think of as fact leads to greater understanding and often shows us that there are no absolutes. :-)

Imo i would burn the m.h bulbs for at least 6hr the corals need it but do what you do good luck..
