Mhlle

My Hippo has it and its getting worse. I have been soaking his nori in vitamin C and my water parameters are good. Has anyone cured this or know the best way to cure him?

Thanks. I've read that and it's a great article. I was just wondering if anyone has actually dealt with this successfully.

I did a straw poll of 100 advanced home aquarists and public aquarists, the results are here:

Interestingly, 84% of the reported cures involved moving the fish to a new aquarium.

Carbon use is definitively related to causing HLLE in marine fishes - the problem is that not all carbons cause this, and skimmer use mitigates the issue. The mechanism as to why carbon causes this is unknown. One researcher is currently looking into carbon and its effects on the water, and I've received funding to look into the possibility that it is carbon dust that causes the problem. I'm also going to look into which type of carbon causes the issue (just in case it isn't the dust after all, that way my funding won't be wasted).

what size tank is the fish in ?? what is its diet (specifically) ?? i have cured fish so bad that you couldnt even telll that they were a Sohol and Chevron tangs. proper diet (soaked in a garlic extract), low stress, and excellent parameters seem to have been the cure for them, IME.
i hate to sound like a tang cop, but the stress of a smaller tank seems to be a serious contributor to this disease. here is an article by Steven Pro that really helped me ...

sorry same article that SAT provided.

Jay- I think its the carbon! I had a cyano outbreak and started running carbon as a way to help clear it up. I had not run carbon before. The MHLLE coincides almost perfectly with the addition of the carbon. I rinsed it well before running it but dust may be the issue. After I read the article SAT posted I stopped the carbon immediately.

Bobby- the tang is in a 120 and is as stress free as could be. I feed him a varied diet consisting of green, red, and purple nori, Spirulina, and he eats some black worms and mysis intended for my CCB. All his food is soaked in vit. C.

edit: I used API activated filter carbon through a canister filter in my sump
