Microalgae density stick

I have this from Florida Aqua Farms but am still a little confused on what it is measuring. The disk disappears for me at 2 cm. Which reading should I look at? How can I tell if my microalgae is dead or alive?

I dont know how the stick works but if its dead it will smell and not be green anymore I think. Email faf about it, they should be happy to help you.

if your macro turns white or clear remove it one because its dead and two when it disinigrates <sp?> it releases what ever it took in from the water

I think hes talking about phytoplankton culture, not macroalgae.
