Mike's 140 Cubish Build

Worse. I don't get it. Last night I did another 30 gallons (120 total now in the past two weeks) with a new bucket of salt then replaced my GAC and put the GFO back on line. I was getting cyano on some of the hampered corals so I tried running without the lights for 2 days earlier this week. STN and cyano continued throughout. I had some RTN in last night. Acros, montis, hydno, cyphastrea, and trumpet have all be impacted. Some of my acros continue to grow very quickly though (tabling mille, tabling hyacinthus, and an efflo) and I have a monti vericusa that looks great. Poci's and my other LPS are looking good too. I'm not getting hung up on the deaths, I just wish it would stop.

Hey Mike,

Curious, was the only thing that changed from your last tank to your new tank the sand? I can't remember if you said you got it from a local guy in colorado, or if it was a special type? perhaps it has some elements (metals maybe) leaching stuff into the tank...

Wish I could do more than offer good luck and hope for the best. If you recover and are in need of frags, keep me in mind. I'm a frequent shipper.

Derrick - yes. I did get it from another local reefer. I washed it very well. Last night I was actually pondering replacing it. I've heard of 'bad sand' but I've never worried about it. Maybe I should?

Thanks crvz - I think your corals would probably do just fine in my tank. I mean, if they can live through a hurricane they can surely live through my situation, right!? I might take you up on that after things are back in line.

Yeah I am no expert by any means, but it seems like you have eliminated most of the potential causes for this.. I might be suspicious of the sand at this point.

Your water source checks out ok right?

The water is crystal. I just had a guy stop by who runs a high end tank service. He went over most of the normal parameters (Ca, alk, phosphates, nitrates, temp, salinity) and took a close look at the filtration, lighting, pumps, etc but couldn't find a smoking gun. All parameters are in check. Phosphates are a touch high but not high enough to cause concern (I just added my GFO back last night and haven't been doing VSV in some time so this wasn't too unexpected). My heater had a little condensation in it but it was not 'wet'. I pulled it anyways. Pumps are clean on the inside. My vortec, Gen 2, shows no signs of deterioration. He felt that flow, lighting, everything was good. In the end, he recommended that I break off anything and everything that might possibly be infected and hope to 'get ahead' of it rather than hope for recovery. I just filled about a 1/3 of a 5 gallon bucket. Last night I probably filled a 1/4 of a bucket.

About the only thing we didn't check for was copper. He had a high range kit that came back without a reading but I'm going to bring a sample by his place later this week to do a low range.

I tested my top off and water change water earlier this week and didn't find anything (Ca, alk, Mag, ammonia, and pH in the water change water). TDS is good.

No, I'm not measuring my ORP. I used to back in the day but don't have a meter these days and never found it particularly helpful. I used to obsess over having good ORP rather than monitor the health of my inhabitants and made a number of bad decisions as a result (I think watching my ORP drove me too far towards a nutrient starved tank). That said, if I had one I would like to get a reading although I'm sure it's terrible with all the malay going on in the tank.

Good news....no die off since last week. I also found some healthy frags of hydno and orange monti cap hidden on the back of some rocks. I did another 30 gallon change and swapped my GFO. Things are looking up.

More good news...my wife gave birth to our second kiddo on the 2nd. Oliver Duncan was born at ~9am after a speedy labor. We were in the hospital for <35 minutes before delivery. We were *slightly* hoping for a girl but are very happy with another boy. Time for me to get snipped...and not by DIY!

I can't believe you used a coral name for Oliver's middle name. You'll never hear the end of that one.

Congrats on your newest frag!

Congrats!! We're due in about 3 weeks... it'll be our first. Here's hoping for your kind of labor!

I had to resurrect this picture. I was looking through the thread again and came across this. I was crying I was laughing so hard.

Congrats again on the new little bambino!!!

Glad to hear things are coming around in the tank.

Thanks all for the well wishes.

LOL about the middle name being Duncan. It's my father-in-law's first name. Maybe I can finagle a frag after his namesake for my birthday. :)
