Mike's 75 Gallon

Tank is looking really nice, I always get nervous drilling tanks :)
What do you plan on keeping? sps, lps, softies? you should get a dosing pump if you plan on keeping hard corals, trust me they are life savers as you don't have to constantly manually dose your tank.

Rock work looks good...I know the feeling of wanting to change things, Im already at that point and mines been running about 3 months and only one month with fish...you have the exact same RO/DI system as I do. It serves its purpose lol

Thanks! My RO/DI is actually acting really weird. I just replaced all of the filters including the membrane. I put a 75GPD membrane in it. My unit is not making any waste water and producing very very little water (around 3 gallons in 12+ hours). I have re-seated the membrane, double checked all of the lines, and checked the filters. I don't know whats wrong with it? The pressure seems fine and the unit worked fine before I replaced my filters (micron, carbon, resin). After I replaced those filters the unit only produced around 2 gallons and STOPPED. So I figured I would replace the membrane, got it today and now I have other problems. What the heck is going on? :headwallblue:

When you replace the membrane, you have to switch the waste and output line so it flushes the crap out of the membrane...I had to do mine for almost 2 hours...I also had to add a touch of lube to the oring end to actually get it to seat all the way...when you think its all the way in, its really not...took me a couple times to get it right

Thanks for the tip Steve. Just popped my membrane out and re-seated it, didn't notice much difference in the way it went in. Also just swapped my pure water and waste water, i'll try and flush it for a couple hours and see if I notice a difference.

Flushed the membrane. Didnt help. I took it all apart and found a check valve in the elbow for the waste water line. There is a small ball/thing in the check valve, I used a tooth pick to loosen the "thing" inside. Also gave it a good blow from both ends a reinstalled. I now have waste water and purified water. Both dripping at the same rate. But so far making ro/di water at 000TDS.

I don't think that you are going to need this yet, however it is never bad to plan ahead, I am in the process of putting together a 75 myself to setup this summer/fall when I move to Texas. So I will be in here quite a bit.

I did the same thing and my was stuck, but when I did what you did I had good and bad water flowing at the same rate...I installed a ball valve on the waste line and it worked fine...I asked coralife about this and they told me the flow restrictor wasnt readily available for sale and to buy another unit...I laughed quite hard and bought the ball valve

Yep, looks like I'll be doing the same thing with the valve.

The tank is full and running like a charm. I must say, I am LOVING the herbie overflow. Dead silent.

Time to get this cycle rolling. Any suggestions?

Mike

Hey Steve.

There is 100lbs dry rock, 40lbs of dry sand, and 20lbs of live sand. I added the live sand after I had finished filling with water and it was really cloudy! I cant believe how fast it has cleared up. Water is crystal clear. Last time I set this tank up it took literally 2 weeks to clear.

The cycle..Tank was just filled yesterday, but I decided to test for ammonia. The tank is actually reading .50 ammo. Is it abnormal to have detectable ammo after only a few hours lol? Last night I threw in the 1 cube of mysis shrimp I had left just to see if I can help kick start it. I don't know...could the "live" sand have caused the ammo spike?

I have a 10 gal with eh..about a pound of LR, should I add that LR to my sump to seed? I don't want the rock in the display. The 10 gal did have ich and I lost 2 fish. :thumbdown. Could the ich possibly be transferred with the LR? I don't think i'll take that chance if so.

If I had to guess maybe something in the sand gave you a little spike...what are you testing with? If its an API ammonia test those basically start out at .25 instead of 0...I wouldnt put anything in your display that had ich...why chance starting out behind the 8 ball? Let something decompose in the tank for about a week, test, once you start seeing ammonia, leave it for another week, remove, test till you get high ammonia, then high nitrites, then when you get high nitrates, do a water change and your on you way...mine took about a month
