How rare are the Mimics and what kind of system do they needto be set up in? If anyone knows where I can get one around the Chicago area I'd much appreciate it.

They are very rare. Chances are you can't get one. Scientists are just now starting to study them and even they are having a hard time finding them in the wild. I'm almost certain they aren't available in the hobby.

You might occasionally be able to find mimics by chance.Suppliers might sometimes calll them zebra octos as they sometimes dispay lionfish like paterns. They do not nee rocks, all they need is some fine sand ( quite deep) as a substrate and nothing else.

don't even bother with mimics.. they are best left in the ocean.

They don't mimic in the tank, they don't change colors, they supposed ink frequently.. And the biggest thing is that They are rare and shouldn't be bothered by people at all!

Get a Bimac.. they have personality and are so much easier to care for.

whats a bimic?

A bimac is the nickname for two species of octopuses whos name starts with bimac...

Octopus bimaculoides is the most commonly kept and probably the easiest to care for species and Octopus bimaculatus which is similar have two eye spots on the mantle but getting larger and hardly seen in the trade

yeah, what colin said... hehe.
Seriously though, if you want to try octopuses, the info on Bimaculoides is quite impressive, and seem to be interesting species to care for.

Tropicorium, Inkster Rd. Brownstown or New Boston, MI (can't remember where the border is)

I think it was 300 bucks. Saw it two summers ago. Anyone else who's been there has seen it, they made a big deal out of it.

go with the bimac...they have WONDERFUL personalities...

Blue rings should NEVER be kept in a hobby tank as they are VERY DEADLY and are better left in the wild.

As for the MIMIC, they need to be left in the wild, they are rare enough there, we do not need to harvest these for spot or hobby, they are AMAZING creatures, that should only be viewed on the discovery channel.
