Mimic Tang questions

Thanks for all the responses so far, and I really like all the pictures. I'm bumping this thread in hopes that someone has pictures of their half-black mimic tang (Acanthurus pyroferus) as a juvenile and adult. But, I'd really love pictures of any mimic tangs. Thanks!

Heres mine.

Great pics of a beautiful fish. I just added a juvi to my tank. Looking forward to the color change. I'm partial to the subtle coloration of this fish.

I'm getting smarter by the minute! Thanks for the pictures, Tuna.

Does someone know what the differences are between the pictures that Gary posted and the blue coloration of the one below and that I've linked in the first post? I like the blue a little more, though they are both beautiful fish, and I'd like to know what I'm getting before hand if at all possible.

(i hope my picture here is not breaking the rules, but credit marinecenter.com for the image)

FYI
I recalled seing that photo when I was researching tangs, it is from The Marine Center and if you read the description "Adults do NOT have blue fins (thats a funky underwater photo).

My adult has a blueish sheen to it's fins. They aren't blue like that photoshopped pic, but they are colorful. It is about 5-6" and grown from a baby. They get even more colorful as they grow.

I don't have any good pictures. I have a terrible camera and I am a terrible photographer. Sorry.

Not my words, That was a quote directly from TMC addressing that picture. I thought it was valid info for crvz.

I heard from someone else that they had a problem with their mimic tang nipping at all kinds of coral (stonies and leathers) as well as clams. Has anyone else noticed this?

This would be a lemonpeel mimic...correct?

Hi,
I have tried two mimic's and both were nipping on my clams.

Casino- Those mimic pics that Treg posted are exactly the coloration that my mimic is turning into. Mine started out as a solid yellow juvie, no blue or any other color besides yellow. His pic is on page 1 of this thread and this color variant is the Herald's angel mimic.

So is it safe to say that the lemonpeel, halfblack, chocolate and herald's mimics are all pyroferus and will turn out like that one or close to it? Only the Chronixis and Tristis will be diffrent?

Ah, well fellers, I picked up a yellow Herald's mimic last week (not the lemon peel, no blue on it), hopefully it will take to the new surroundings. Here's a shot.

Unfortunately, Casino, it is NOT safe to say that. Most of the pictures in this thread represent Herald's or Lemon Peel mimics (which are pretty much yellow as juveniles). I've spoken to a number of wholesalers, retailers, as well as a few taxonimists, and I get a lot of different stories. Some folks feel that they are all the same fish, just collected from various places, others feel differently. I may be foolish and try a half-black as well as this guy, but we'll see. I've never established what the adult coloration is of a half-black from someone in the hobby (who's raised one from juvenile). I'd love some input if someone here has it!!

Wow Kahuna Tuna it hasent changed at all since the last pic, has he? I see you also have a blue eyed tang, how do you like him, same as a kole in behavior and temperment?

I get what you mean crvz. Its just so difficult. I just upgraded to a 90 and I really want a tang. I dont want to have too since I know a 90 is too small for 2. Id rather know which one it will turn out in the end. No space for second guessing.

The herald seems to be the one to get. Altho that blue eyed tang in Kahuna Tuna's gallery looks awesome and I think his colors are the same when adult and juvi so theres no guessing and hoping with that guy.

The changes in the mimic have been very gradual over time. Its coming up on the one year mark for this fish and the changes have been slow and steady. I love the binotatus, he is about the mellowest tang I have ever kept and hasn't grown nearly as fast as my mimic. I would say this species is very much like the koles I have kept and is in my opinion just about the ideal tang for a smaller tank.

As to the question of how an individual mimic juvenile will look once it reaches adulthood I dont think you can count on any two fish looking exactly the same. I have seen a huge variety of different looks one these fish reach adult size.
