Miniatus Question

I am thinking about getting a Cherry or a Miniautus Grouper for one of my 210's. I keep seeing some pics that look like the miniatus fades out when it gets bigger and older. Is this true! I am really stuck in between in which one to get so some help or experience would help!

I don't have any experience with them but I have seen a 7 inch one that still had a nice red color to him.

IME they do get a little bit faded as they get older. My bigger problem is that they hide too much. You often get to see a beautiful flash of red as they dive out for food and then dive back into cover. This can happen even after they've been well established and settling into a tank.

I've noticed they can change their color. one minute mine would be bright red, the next it would fade out to a pink. usually only came out of hiding long enuogh to eat a tank-mate. their mouths are huge watch what you keep with them.

The Cherry or Louti groupers are usually out more than the Miniautus Grouper. If you had a very large tank, like a 1000gal tank, you would notice that the grouper will start to act differently and be out more and protecting it's area. In small tanks they hide a lot and act like Oscars.

I've had a Blue Spot grouper for 15 years and he hides a lot except at feeding time.

I think you'll find a lot of groupers colors fade as they get large, not just the Miniautus Grouper.

Is there a pretty grouper that stays out alot?

Most grouper just either hang on the bottom or behind some rocks waiting for some thing to happen, like food coming into the tank or a fish to eat. Both the Louti & Miniatus are pretty active as far as grouper go but they do grow large so you need to take that into account. Louti will actually move and dig into sand in the tank.

My louti (in my picture gallery) stayed out all the time but hovered close to some macro growth.
