minimum distance for 250 hqi's?

How close can I be to the water surface with 250 hqi's? I'm building a new hood so I need to know how tall to make it.

It really depends on the size of your tank, how large of an area you want to light, and what you'll be keeping directly under the light.

I'll be keeping sps, clams ect. the tank is 48Lx18wx24h.

I also have a 48inch tank, and for 2 hqi pendants to light the entire tank, the bottom of the pendants need to be at least 6 inches above the water line. And even then, i still get a dim area in the middle.

what kind of pendants do you use jedininja?

They are the old style PFO's. I'm upgrading to Lumenarcs though, so should get a better spread of light.

I have Lumenarcs,so 6 to 8"s would be ok?

I would always give yourself a few extra inches if you are building the canopy so that you can make any adjustments that you need to.
