minimum light?

idk the difference between SE and DE. my parents really dont like the idea of 500 watts, so i can only go up to 300 max. kinda sucks being just a kid lol. i most likely wont start with sps and with my design that i have in mind all the SPS will be near the top. would oddesys be fine for a while until i start up SPS? i would really like to get them because they are such a deal but if you guys say no then i wont, but i CANT spend over $200 and i dont even have that much yet and i still need everything but the stand and the tank... EVERYTHING

The simple answer is yes, you can keep sps alive and growing (albeit slowly) under a cheap fixture.

You can definately get away with Odyssea lights to get started with sps, but be aware that you will probably want to upgrade as soon as you are able to. You won't get much back if/when you decide to sell the Odyssea's and upgrade, so I think it would be better to save up until you can buy a better fixture. In the long run it will cost less to buy one better fixture than getting an Odyssea, buying new bulbs for it, and then eventually buying a better one.

IMO, the best bang for your buck would be this fixture, assuming you take the Odyssea route:

I understand that your parents don't want to use that much electricity, but if you run 250 watt halides you don't need to run them as long as less powerful lights. I only run my 250 watters for 5 hours per day with no supplemental lighting.

WOOT just got my dad to agree on the 500 watts. so 500 watts it is! anyone got any recomendation on bulbs? i need 2 bulbs and i want consistant lighting throughout the tanks (same bulbs) should i go 14000k or 20000k, im thinking 14000k because i have a 70 watt and i REALLY like the color on it. but ofc i want the best for my corals so just tell me on what to get. oh and also, im not gonna but $100 bulbs, please under $90 each, preferably around $50.

Double Ended or Single Ended bulbs?

Here is my recommendation for a DE bulb:
