Minimum size tank

What would a minimum size tank for two pipefish or two seahorse? Could two pipefish be happy in a 5 gallons ?

Neither would be "happy" or survive in a 5 gallon tank. Sorry :(

For a pair of seahorses - 20 gal absolute minimum, 29 gal preferred. For a pair of pipes - it depends on what kind of pipes. I personally wouldn't put pipes in anything less than a 20, they need room to swim.

Buying in multiples (pairs or whatnot) always seemed like the obvious choice to me, but can you keep just one seahorse? Do they need the companionship? Or do they fare well alone? I am just curious, because I've never run into anyone who owns only one seahorse.

Also, I've noticed that people on this forum tend to have much larger minimums than aquarists in this country do. O_o (The average tank in Japan is less than 20 gallons. And I'm fairly certain that I've seen several smaller tanks with seahorses in them.)

Seahorses are social animals and do better in pairs or groups. It doesn't have to be M/F pairs, it can be all males or all females. They just want a pal to hang out with. In my years of keeping seahorses they tend to become depressed whenthey are kept alone. Very sad to see.

As for the tank size. You "could" live in a bathroom your whole life. But would you want to? If we are to keep animals in our homes it is our responsibility to make sure they are happy, healthy, and comfortable. They need room to swim, court, hunt, play, LIVE. Just like everyone and everything else.

Many apartments in Japan are smaller than some US bathrooms. Most of my friends in college didn't even have enough space to own a real bed. I don't think the same idea of "comfort" is shared here. It's definitely not a matter of "want" or whatever, though I've seen the occasional visitor from overseas exclaim, "Omg, the apartments are so small! How can people even want to live here!!!" Thus, people here probably arwen't thinking the same way that you guys are about tank space.

You could keep a bluestripe pipefish in a 10 gallon, possibly a pair if you were real good about water quality *assuming* you can find some trained to eat frozen and non-living food. An LFS near me has trained every pipe she sells to eat mysis....

I know the size of the homes / apts. are very different in Japan and also other countries. It seems like in America we have decided bigger is better. It does help with water quality in the aquariums though.

Good luck with the seahorse project. They are addictive.

I had a 55g and decided to buy two pipes from liveaquaria. they were such beauties!! upon arrival, they were soooo long!! They really looked cramped to me. Based on my experience, I wouldn't do it. They looked like they needed more room to me
